2004 Cruisers Yachts Cruisers 320 Express Description
Here's a simple lesson when it comes to buying a boat: don't take a model's implied size for granted; you often get a whole lot more than what the model number suggests. The 2004 Cruisers 320 Express is a prime example. It sounds like a 32-footer but in actuality it stretches to 35 ft. 9 in.

The 320's cabin offers more space that you would expect because Cruisers designers vetoed the usual mid-cabin Zen den with its stooped entry in favour of extending the salon ceiling aft and using a pullout settee rather than a berth.Whoever sits there is part of the salon party, not a forgotten loner, but when it's time for sleeping a privacy curtain encloses the space.

One adult or two children can overnight on the settee, while up in the bow the forward berth is the perfect fit for a couple. Another guest (preferably somebody who's vertically challenged) can sleep on the convertible dinette. It's not designed for large formal dinners, but three can comfortably enjoy a small breakfast. With only a bar-size fridge, microwave oven and single burner, you're not going to be preparing seven-course meals in this galley, but it's an ample setup for weekend getaways.

Most of that fun will be had abovedecks, namely on the aft deck. The location has facing lounges with a cocktail table in between. Keep it in place when serving refreshments from the port side wet bar, convert it into a super-sized sunlounge if you want to take a snooze in the sun, or stow it away under the helm seat when you want more room to mingle.

Speaking of maneuvering room, the head compartment is pleasantly spacious.

With only one small porthole providing natural light to augment the overhead lighting, this isn't the brightest place for makeup application, but you're likely on board to relax so that shouldn't be an issue.

Forget the makeup, the 320 has an extensive swim platform big enough for more than two people to hang out - or even fish - at once.

Space is also bountiful in another area where you need it most - the walkthrough windshield. There's one step up, a rail for support and a wide blanket of non-skid as well as a large opening through the windshield. All ensure that your trip to the bow is made easily and safely. That's a good thing when you consider the number of guests who are sure to be lured forward by the double-width sun pad on the front deck.

What's interesting about the 320 Express is that although you get bonus space with the boat, you're not trading performance for extra size. With twin throaty 5.7 GXi Volvo Penta DP engines turning DuoProp drives, the boat maxxed out at 43 mph. That kind of speed will allow you to cover good distances for some excellent weekend excursions. If you're not in a rush the boat holds plane at 12.5 mph and 2,400 rpm. Just kick back and enjoy the view.

From the helm, visibility is great, even with the Bimini top (standard equipment) in place. The helm seat fits two with split bolsters to ensure comfort in both a perched and fully seated position. The Faria gauges are easy to read and the massive Volvo trim buttons to the left of the tilt steering wheel can probably be seen from a helicopter overhead. Also more than adequate is the TV-sized surface on the taupe-coloured, no-glare console reserved for the electronic equipment of your choice.

I think you'll find that the Cruisers 320 Express is far more than adequate in many departments. That's what happens when a 32-footer is stretched to more than 35 - but still offered for the price of a smaller craft.
