2005 Legend Legend 17 Exterminator Description
This is the very first time a Legend has graced these pages. It's long overdue, since the Canadian firm produces quality aluminum craft that are popular as fishing, family and cottage boats throughout the country. The Legend line is extensive, filling a catalogue with over 30 models - not including pontoons.

Legend offers its alloy hulls in two modes, either riveted or welded and most of them are formed from tough 5052 cold-rolled aluminum .100 inch thick. That's in comparison to the .073 inch material used on a fair number of competitors' hulls. An all-aluminum "Torsion Beam Construction" stringer system is custom designed and prebuilt for each hull and the cavities are filled with sound-deadening floatation foam. Plus, the plywood floor is specially treated to defeat rot and warpage. All of Legend's basic construction elements carry extensive warranties.

The challenge of finishing an aluminum boat is met with snagless marine-grade carpet, optional Dura- Deck vinyl flooring and a urethane paint system that involves baking the entire hull for a rock hard coating.

For our first try at a Legend, we were fortunate to be given a 17 Exterminator. A side-console open fishing boat, it was simple enough to give us a close look at how well Legend does its work and it is also representative of the company's welded hull designs.

Quality of workmanship was immediately apparent. The boat is circumscribed by an oversized aluminum extrusion that is shaped to form the gunnels. On some tin boats this piece is tacked on with rivets. Not only did the big moulding accurately follow the contours of the hull's sides, but it was integral to those sides, thus adding a noticeably high level of structural rigidity. And the carpet work was excellent. There were no gaps, no clumsy overlaps and no errant threads. It looks sprayed on.

The Legend X-Cargo system puts more storage in better places than on less carefully thought-out fishing boats. Included is the X-Cargo's innovative transom drawer that can be removed for use as a potable cargo box. There are two livewells equipped with circulation pumps plus a raised baitwell situated in front of the helm that holds its own minnow bucket.

And, lo and behold, the fold-flat fishing seats, usually the worst chairs in boating, are actually better than acceptable. Cushy, supportive and comfortable.

The 17 was also large enough to demonstrate the GenX hull shape's performance characteristics. Featuring a 17-degree V and formed-in reverse chines, the boat is wide at the beam (90") and still wide at the bottom (76") providing lots of interior space, but also delivering stable at-rest characteristics. Even motivated by a snappy 115 Mercury OptiMax, the V-shape, the wide bottom and the smooth hull conspired to moderate the boat's acceleration, but the 17 wasn't particularly sensitive to load. Its hole shot would likely be about the same with two hefty fisherguys and their gear.

Once underway, the 17 is quiet for an aluminum hull. The thick alloy, the Torsion Beam innards and the foam do their work. Handling is smooth and predictable and the ride is soft and dry. We couldn't challenge it with waves other than its own wake, but the Legend should be a very safe boat.

Perhaps one of the most noteworthy Legend features is the company's marketing and pricing strategy. All of the prices are included in the company's brochure - including Mercury engines and the matched Shoreland'r trailers. Many typical options and accessories are contained in package deals, and the prices, honoured by any Legend dealer, are definitely attractive.
