2001 Stanley 24 CC Description
If an aluminum boat is the archetypal “guy” vessel, then the sort built by Stanley must fall into the maximum-macho category. Built on a semi-custom basis from welded aluminum, they are tough.
Stanley’s custom boat buyers include various commercial concerns and government agencies; their boats have to be built to exacting specs. Fortunate civilians who find their way to the Connor Industries shop in Parry Sound, Ont. — where Stanleys are built — get the same boats, but with some creature comforts.
One of the things I most enjoy about testing Stanley's boats is getting a glimpse of someone else’s vision of their ultimate go-anywhere water machine. The test boat, a 24-foot diesel-powered, jet-driven centre-console, was ordered by an owner who wants a speedy, powerful no-maintenance boat that can go anywhere, with the ability to pull bow-first up to rugged shorelines.
It’s a handsome unfinished-aluminum centre-console runabout, with comfortable helm seat, console seat and engine-box seating and a welded T-top to keep off sun and rain. The 300-hp Yanmar diesel in the engine box drives a Hamilton Water Jet through a transmission.
Stanley could also power this boat with a gasoline sterndrive. The result would be an equally utilitarian craft at a much reduced price. The boat alone is $38,418, but the diesel and jet drive are pricy. Want something in the same length, but with a closed deck or small cuddy? Just ask.
The 24 Centre Console test boat, however, is impressive, with the handling characteristics of a sporty jetboat. The owner added a transmission instead of relying on a “bucket” mounted on the jet-drive for reverse; the result is even more precise control at slow speeds.
You can turn this boat in its own length and pull tight circles. Slalom manoeuvres take no special skills, aside from the ability to warn your passengers to hang on. With a 17-degree deadrise, the boat doesn’t spin out in the corners. Test day was relatively calm, but the boat jumped some big wakes with ease.
The Yanmar diesel was quiet and well-mannered. Even though the engine hatch still had no insulation installed, special engine mounts and a beefy gasket on the hatch helped keep cockpit noise to a minimum. At 30 mph, with the engine ticking over at 3,000 rpm, the sound at the helm registered 88 dbA, rising to only 89 dbA in the aft cockpit, virtually over the engine hatch. At 3,800 rpm and top speed the sound-meter read a respectable 93 dbA at the helm and 94 in the aft cockpit area.
The boat would make a great fishing or sport-diving platform, with plenty of room to move around on deck. Storage abounds, in lockers in the bow platform, in the console and in coaming lockers that also keep cleats and lines well out of the way. A welded-aluminum T-top, with green canvas on top and four rocket-launcher fishing pole holders, looks great and provides shelter.
The floors are the ultimate non-skid—aluminum tread-plate, with its diamond shaped patterns. Like the rest of the boat, it's meant for folks who prefer hiking boots to deck shoes. It’s sure to age well and stand up to almost any conceivable mistreatment.
