2005 Harbercraft Harbercraft 1975 SK Description
It's obvious from first glance that the Harbercraft 1975 is not just another pretty runabout. It's handsome enough, but the boat's rugged go-anywhere construction also has a direct influence on its performance and handling.

Like all of Harbercraft's weldedaluminum boats, the 19-foot waterjet- powered bowrider is built using "pre-flex" technology, which harnesses internal forces to give the boat added strength. The end result was evident as we cruised along in Lake Erie at 30 mph in a usually bumpy one-foot chop, with the boat virtually vibration-free and very rigid.

As well as keeping down noise levels (sometimes high in aluminum boats) Harbercraft's construction techniques also result in a fine finish. Back on shore after our speed and handling trials, I looked into the areas of the boat that often don't see daylight; the fit and finish was terrific. In the storage areas, under the engine hatch, nothing was left rough.

The model we tested was configured as a bowrider, with a captain's chair, a matching swivel seat on the companion side and a stern bench in front of the engine compartment. Behind the rear bench, the sunpad atop the motor compartment offered plenty of room to stretch out.

Above the water-jet outdrive the boat has a swim platform. The 1975 can also be ordered in fishing configuration, with baitwells and a floor mount for a swivel pedestal seat on the raised casting platform. The top of the deck has a non-skid surface for safety. In the bow area there is storage for a rode and anchor.

From the cockpit area there is a built-in step to improve access to the bow area through the walk-through windshield. The windshield has a very square shape and is extremely rigid. It's rugged-looking, but would offer tremendous protection against the weather. I understand Harbercraft will be offering a more curved windshield on some models in 2005.

The 1975's ruggedness goes beyond appearance, though. The boat is definitely is built to last and will require very little maintenance.Along the keel, running the full length of the boat, there's an extra piece of metal about six inches wide, forming a skid pad for protection against beaching the boat or striking rocks in shallow areas as you approach the shoreline. Many who buy this boat will understandably want to take advantage of the jet drive's ability to run in thin water.

The helm chair is very comfortable, with armrests and a good view of all the instruments on the dash. Under the step used to reach the bow area there is a locked storage compartment. Along both sides of the boat there are built-in fishing rod-holders.

Taking the boat out for a test drive on Lake Erie, I proceeded to put it through the normal sequence of events, testing for top speed, acceleration and smoothness throughout the various ranges of power. The boat was equipped with the 175-hp engine, but more powerful engine options are available (the 200 hp OptiMax Sport Jet or the 240 hp EFI Sport Jet). Still, we reached a top speed of 44 mph at 5,900 rpm, more than acceptable. What really amazed me was the acceleration of the 19-foot boat, from 0 to 20 mph in 4.5 seconds and 0 to 30 in 6.8 seconds.

I always enjoy driving waterjetdrive boats, as they always feel responsive to the throttle. The 1975 cruised along nicely at 25 mph, but with its deep-V hull, responded immediately to all turns and manoeuvres.

This Harbercraft 1975 was equipped with an optional weed cleaner called EZ-clean to remove weeds caught in the intake area.We didn't need it during our test run, but with increased weed growth on many inland lakes, it's sure to become a popular feature.

Overall, the 1975 is an excellent choice for the boater faced with widely varied weather conditions, who is looking for a boat that will last for many years with minimum maintenance.
