It was 1954 when Carver Boats, then an upstart mahogany plywood runabout builder, ventured forth into the marine business.Today Carver is 50 years young and setting standards in personal yacht luxury.
Many would agree that Carver's current identity was defined during the early 1980s with the introduction of distinctive aft cabins. Like many models preceding it, the Carver 46 Motor Yacht combines livability features with impressive sea-going capabilities.
Exemplifying the popularity of aft cabin designs, the Carver 46 has several areas, inside and out, where people will gather to dine and socialize. Outdoor entertaining is always a delight, and Carver makes the most out of the 46's enclosed aft deck and its expansive bridge. When the time comes to escort guests below, a fullbeam salon provides plenty of room for lounging and moving about. On the bridge you will find a helm-forward layout with a centrally located captain's chair flanked by companion seats on either side.Aft and starboard is an L-shaped lounge offering generous seating for four adults, complete with a generously sized dinette table.
Just three steps down from the bridge is the aft deck, which has been enclosed by a fibreglass hardtop, practical wing doors and canvas. Here you will find a wet bar with room for an optional icemaker or refrigerator. There is plenty of storage space too.
Aft, a transom door provides access to the moulded stairway leading down to the swim platform where dockside water, shore power and cable television connections are located. A transom shower, large lockable storage cabinet and concealed swim ladder make this a true activity stage.
The raised side-deck design of the 46 Motor Yacht lets Carver take full advantage of the boat's 14'11" inch beam. The result is an interior large enough to accommodate a mid-cabin stateroom and two more staterooms located at opposite ends of the boat. There is a single berth in the midcabin and a full-size berth located aft and forward.
For this class of yacht, the salon is very luxurious.A sofa on the port side converts to a berth,while the L-shaped sofa to starboard contains two recliners. With a standard 30-inch flat-screen TV and a Sony component stereo system, you will be entertained.
Carver offers three different dinette styles on the 46. Our test boat featured a bench-style dinette with comfortable seating for four to starboard, plus a breakfast bar with two stools to port. Seating surfaces in the salon area are finished in Ultra leather, the countertop is granite and all wood surfaces are done in rich cherry. Galley amenities include a microwave/convection oven, three-burner glass-top stove with oven, coffee maker and an optional trash compactor or dishwasher. Again, there is plenty of storage space for food and dishes.
As large as she is, the Carver 46 Motor Yacht handles beautifully.With single-lever electronic shifters plus bow and stern thrusters, the 46 outmanoeuvres boats half the size.A one to two-foot chop was of little concern. Wide-open throttle found the yacht doing 30.4 mph, while the recommended 2,400 rpm cruising speed equates to 26 mph.
With a steady 10-second acceleration to plane, the real thrill comes when the engine's turbos kick in around 1,400 rpm. The yacht's twin Volvo 480 hp diesels feel strong, giving you a sensation of smooth, uninterrupted power. Just goes to show you how exciting a yacht can be to operate.
