2005 Stanley Stanley Mink 16 CC Description
Many outboard-powered boats are pressed into service as cottage commuters and all-round utility boats. On Ontario's Georgian Bay, however, where Stanley boats are built by Connor Industries of Parry Sound, Ont., the boat in questions must be rugged and forgiving.

Stanley Boats earned its reputation building solid aluminum welded boats for a wide range of work and commercial applications in tough boating environments. It wasn't long before the local residents and cottagers on the bay were turning to them to build boats for the consumer market. As a semi-custom builder, Stanley was able to address the need; now the company produces several lines of aluminum boats that are stocked by dealers, to meet increasing demand for cottage utility boats, just like the Mink.

The Mink models include the 16 and 19, available in dual or centre console layouts. Our test boat was a Mink 16 centre console, powered by a Honda BF50. Our test model from Central Marine in Midland, Ont., came equipped with optional white hull paint, canvas package with dodger, dual fuel tanks, seat cushions and custom flooring. Like all Stanleys the Mink 16 is constructed of welded 3/16" aluminum plate with welded lifting strakes, keel guard and gunwales, giving it a very solid feel for a 16-foot boat.

The interior is ideal for a utility boat, with aluminum non-skid on decks and atop the forward and port and starboard storage compartments, one of which holds the battery. The cockpit is self-draining, ideal for hosing out the boat after hauling firewood or spending the day fishing with the kids.

The centre console is quite straightforward, with basic engine instruments, controls and an accessory switch panel for navigation lights, horn and accessories and a 12-volt power source. The Plexiglas windscreen provides adequate protection from the wind and the stainless grab bar that wraps over the console and windshield provides a solid place to hang on when the going gets rough.

While seating capacity is listed at five or six people, equipped as our test boat, seating is really for four - two on the forward console seat and two on the helm seat. Both seats have storage below;the helm seat-back flips, providing an excellent position for a little fishing.

Beyond being rugged, a cottage commuter must have adequate and efficient power.Although the Mink 16 is rated for a maximum of 70 hp, the Honda BF50 more than filled the bill. The Honda popped the boat on plane quickly and delivered a top speed of 32 mph. Acceleration was good with the boat reaching 20 mph in 7.8 seconds and 30 mph - almost top speed - in 14 seconds. Our tests were conducted on a cool late October day, with early morning frost on the docks. The Honda BF50 fired right up and idled smoothly as it warmed up for the runs.

With a slight wind from the north and a 6-12-inch chop on Midland Bay, we were able to put the Mink through its paces in typical conditions. The deep-V hull handled the chop well and carved some pretty tight turns at both cruise and at speed. Being lightly loaded, the boat was sensitive to motor trim both in the chop and in the turns. Overall, I found the Mink 16 fun to blast around in and quite responsive to steering and trim inputs. It's an ideal combination for a boat you'll probably be letting your kids use at the cottage.

Is the Mink a great cottage utility? You bet. Its solid construction, paired with reliable Honda power, makes this boat a good candidate for hauling, touring, towing the kids around and fishing.
