2001 Four Winns 170 Horizon LE Description
While most fish ’n ski boats – runabouts intended for dual use as fisherman- and family-pleasers – are being built these days by manufacturers whose main focus is fishing, it’s nice to see one put together by a builder whose primary focus is family-oriented runabouts.
While some fish ‘n skis converted by fishing-oriented builders are pretty poor compromises, the Four Winns 170 Horizon LE with the Fish ’N Ski package is another matter   entirely. The Boats&Places test boat, powered by an carbureted Johnson 115 ouboard, also has the advantage of being relatively affordable.
But first, let’s take a closer look at some of the boat’s compromises. The hull itself doesn’t look the least bit fishy (for starters, it's fibreglass) and Four Winns has wisely avoided any fish-inspired logos or metalflake paint (a dead giveaway that the boat has ambitions as a bass-hunter). In fact, when in “ski” mode, the only fishing-friendly equipment in sight is the electric trolling motor, mounted on the port side of the well-padded open bow area.
The rest of the fishing-oriented equipment is low-key, well-disguised or out of sight. The built-in battery charger and aft livewell fall into the latter category while the Humminbird 100 SX fishfinder mounts unobtrusively forward of the windshield in front of the helm.
As for the swiveling fishing chairs that mount on the convertible forward casting platform and in the middle of the aft area of the cockpit, they spend their non-fishing hours doubling as aft jump seats.
The swiveling helm and companion seats forward will accommodate boaters of any stripe and they’ll all appreciate the drained icebox and the Sony AM-FM cassette stereo.
The snap-in carpeting adds comfort, but can be easily removed, leaving the full fibreglass liner for hose-it-down maintenance.
For water skiers and wakeboarders, the small swim platforms on either side of the outboard engine well are a welcome addition, with the boarding ladder to starboard. Those platforms, extending right into the water to form the “pods” that are part of the boat’s Stable Vee hull, also help the boat’s performance – both as a tow boat and a speedy and stable fishing platform.
Those pods contribute to more than respectable acceleration numbers, with the boat reaching 20 mph in under six seconds and 30 mph in 8.21 seconds. They also help hold the boat on plane to just below 3,000 rpm, providing ideal wakeboard speeds between 2,800 and 3,000 rpm. At 4,000 to 4,500 rpm, recreational water skiers will be happy.
Top speed, in radar testing, was 41.1 mph at 5,200 rpm, with the speedo reading 43 mph. The boat handles very well, carving tight turns and smoothing out big boat wakes, acting like a larger boat. Once again, those “pods” have the effect of extending the usable hull length to 17'6".
As for the V-4 Johnson 115, it’s predictably got plenty of torque and pep in the mid-range. While Johnson motors may lack the very latest in direct-injection technology, they still incorporate decades of advanced two-stroke development and remain reliable powerplants. Great motivation whether fishing or watersports are your passion.
