2005 Cruisers Yachts Cruisers 300 Express Description
Although the tried and true always holds appeal, there's something to be said for stepping outside of the box. Cruisers took a giant step forward when they created the new 300 Express. Barrett Reid, sales manager for Starport Landing, the Cruisers Yachts dealer in Orillia,Ont.,calls it "our new little batmobile." He likes its shape."It's kind of funky looking compared to other express cruisers - very swoopy."

The 2005 model is longer, wider and curvier, with a raked-back windshield that gives the 31-footer an edgy European look. The craft's hardtop is also an attention-grabber, providing weather protection with or without front, side and aft curtains.

This Cruiser's performance and interior get two thumbs up. The test boat was equipped with twin 320-hp 5.7-litre GXI Volvo Penta engines paired with DuoProp outdrives. That's a whole lot of muscle for a 31-foot express cruiser, but who doesn't want a boat with get-up and go? Even in choppy lake conditions ours got up and went 49 mph at 4,500 rpm. We're talking poker run speeds here. And the hull handles the speeds well. There was no slamming or banging; every entry was remarkably soft. The 300 feels light when up on plane, which it reaches at about 2,500 rpm, yet solid in adverse conditions. The waves weren't pushing us around and the boat tracked true even without hands on the wheel.

And in case you're wondering, no, everything didn't blow apart belowdeck while we bounced around at full throttle. The dinette seat cushions were the only items that tried to bail out.

The cabin is a well-thought-out weekend retreat. The wood details — galley cabinets, dinette table, trim -- are gorgeous, complimenting the classy neutral decor that will stand the test of time.

The galley to port is compact, with five cabinets and one drawer, a single burner, round stainless steel sink, GE microwave and Space Saver coffee maker — ample for simple meal prep. (Who wants to cook on weekends, anyway?) To starboard is the head compartment, which is downright roomy. There's lots of storage here too. Although there isn't a separate shower, a curtain will keep spray nicely confined.

While toilet facilities are certainly important, the big question you want answered is how many people you can invite for an overnighter. There's room for six to sleep - four quite comfortably in the spacious V-berth and rather romantic mid-cabin. The other two, who had better be short and skinny, crash on the convertible dinette. It's perfect for kids or those who have enjoyed too many liquid refreshments and are happy to curl up anywhere.

Everybody you entertain on the Cruisers 30 Express is sure to love spending time on board. What's not to like? The clean white cockpit has contemporary curves on the aft bench, optional wetbar (ours had an icemaker) and crescent lounge with its oblong-shaped foldable cocktail table. There's seating for six, including the captain who has a fabulous bolster setup for ideal visibility.

There's only one element that's going to garner a derogatory comment or two; hopefully, before the model hits mass production, the problem will be smoothed over. The craft's console, which has such an amazing batmobile shape and super sporty Faria gauges, has been coated in a textured grey finish to help eliminate glare. It might work, but it's an eyesore and doesn't fit in with the rest of the decor.

Would it stop me from buying the boat? Heck no. I like the 30's stellar performance, super handling, pretty interior and sexy shape. I would look great at the helm.
