Unrivaled luxury. That's a strong claim to make in today's highly competitive pleasureboat market. The so-called high end is becoming crowded with boats that are impeccably designed and crafted from the finest materials. Nevertheless, there is always one standout, the one with the reputation, the one with the rack of J.D. Power awards. Cobalt leads the runabout pack and the current pontoon King of the Hill is Bennington Marine.
Based in Elkhart, Indiana, the company offers pontoon boats in a range of trim levels including both the affordable Bennington II models and the more pricey top-line R Series.We chose an RFS, just a notch down from the yacht-like RLX.
Luxe appointments and robust construction aside,Bennington's major claim to fame is space utilization. By pushing the enclosure right out to the edges of the floor and by eliminating the starboard entrance gate,the designers have room to present the pontoon boat's standard layout a stern Lbench backed with a motorbox/sun pad, the helm station and two long side loungers but with room remaining for an open central floor and an extended bow area. In the bow, Bennington positions two furniturequality swivel chairs, the nicest we've ever sat in, on the water or in a living room. Each of these thrones is even furnished with a footstool, a padded ottoman that hides a cooler inside! Bennington calls them "bass" seats but they're almost too good for fishing.
The upholstery story continues with benches that are lushly padded, clad with butter-soft 31 oz. expanded vinyl and supported on rot-free heavy duty composite storage compartments. Back in the rear portside corner, the "L" hides an optional change-room enclosure.Taking up no interior space when not in use, it unfolds as the seat section is tilted up.
The helm station deserves special mention, not only for its wind-cheating extra-wide dimensions, but particularly for the captain's bucket seat. We've tested a lot of boats and slumped into in a bunch of buckets this one's the best, better than Cobalt's. You sink in deep cushioning but the shape remains supportive. Fatigue-free and a luscious experience.
Moving the railing right to the tip of the bow also creates room for two triangular enclosures at each corner perfect for storage, speaker mounts and cupholders.The boxes allow the docking and running lights to be faired into protective recesses in the fence's paneling, up off the floor of the boat and out of harm's way.
The Bimini top system is also one of the best we've encountered. The rigid frames are made from tubing 1.25 inches square and the fittings are rattle-free. Plus, patented quick-release struts allow the top to be folded or opened quickly and easily.The 2250's list of canvas options includes everything from individual furniture covers and a storage tonneau through a single Bimini, a double Bimini, to half, 3/4 and full camper enclosures.
And perhaps a little thing, but we give Bennington top marks for locating string net storage pockets just where the loose bottle of suntan lotion or that page-flapping magazine can be stuffed away.
Our test boat came powered to its rated max with a 115 Mercury FourStroke. That much oomph pushed the 2250 to over 25 mph, more than plenty for tubing and fast enough for most skiers. (Bennington builds a three-tube model powered by a sterndrive with up to 320 hp!) For us, however, pontoons are the ultimate in laid-back cruising.At 14 mph and 3,500 rpm we meandered a lot of the sunny Rideau River before we had to head home. But not before we enjoyed a picnic lunch while sitting in those awesome chairs.
