2001 Mainship Pilot 34 Description
Meet the PT Cruiser of the seas.
The Mainship Pilot 34 is one of the most refreshing boats to slice through thewaves, since, well, the last time it did.
While the four-wheeled PT Cruiser has captured the public’s imagination with its throwback styling, the Pilot 34 is in the same boat.
This is a good, old Down East lobster boat and it oozes tradition.
The Pilot 34, like its Mainship trawler cousins, features single diesel engines, either Yanmar 300-hp or Cummins 310- or 350-hp powerplants, and every captain’s best friend – a bow-thruster, which is standard.
Our test boat was powered by the Yanmar diesel and on this day, the 34’s  steep plumb bow and the rise of the sheer were a worthy match for the hostile, jostling four- to five-foot seas beyond the seawalls in Toronto Harbour on Lake Ontario.
Along the lakefront near Ontario Place, the Pilot 34 kept true to it station-keeping and seemed willing to tackle anything. With a 12-foot, three-inch beam and 15,000 pound of heft, the boat handled turns in side swells with remarkable, calming ease.
But then, we shouldn’t have been surprised. These designs, remember, cut their teeth hauling lobster traps in the Atlantic off Martha’s Vineyard. While you're not going to get anywhere fast, our 34 topped out at 23
mph at 3,400 rpm. It was most happy cruising at 2,200 rpm at 13 mph.
The helm and deck areas are spacious, befitting a day cruiser. The transom is deep and sturdy, accessed from the transom through a solid door.     Inlaid cleat brackets and huge walkarounds give the impression of strength and sturdiness before you even step aboard. There is a built-in insulated cooler box and lounge seats, one that can recline to provide a comfortable sleeping area.
The captain’s seat and console area are functional and it's a pleasure these days to operate a 36-foot boat with just one shifter. Take a couple of steps below and you take a couple steps back in time again.
While the world of boating has seemed to have universally adopted cherry wood, this Mainship has teak. Everywhere. The galley has all you would expect of a $235,000 boat these days including range, microwave, coffeemaker and refrigerator plus moulded countertop fiddles anywhere anything could possibly slip off in heavy seas, including the galley table.
You’ll also find shelves to store books, maps and manuals. The television can be viewed from either the forward stateroom, galley or dinette thanks to a well-designed swivel sytem.
The sleeping area itself offers convertible V-berths 6'9" long, surrounded by more teak and a large overhead hatch. The Pilot 34 is available with a hardtop enclosure which makes the step back in time just about perfect.
As it was, our open Pilot was exhilarating. Best of all, nobody talked about the Internet once. It just didn’t seem appropriate.
