2005 Chaparral Chaparral 235 SSi Description
Chaparral, one of North America's most reputable pleasureboat builders, should be happy with its 235 SSi.This model, like so many before it, has a certain panache.

At 24' 11", the 235 SSi is a versatile and spacious cuddy-cabin sport boat. From personal experience I've learned kids (of all ages) enjoy riding in the cabin, getting out of the sun and wind and having a space to call their own. Frankly, I think any boat with a comfortable V-berth is great for anyone, especially couples who occasionally overnight. This one has above-average headroom.

With its black, wide-band gelcoated hull sides, our test model had a bold, classic appearance. Highlighted by tasteful diamond-shaped Platinum Sport graphics, the 235 looked strong and aggressive, and should appeal to those in the market for upscale sport boats. Our test boat came with two activity platforms, the top one integral to the hull and the optional bottom platform a separate component that extends completely over the outdrive.

Chaparral's moulds have been carefully prepared. The company's quadradial lamination process begins with a polyester gelcoat that resists fading, discolouration or chalking. Also used is a modified acrylic epoxy resin coat and syntactic foam. When added to the sidewalls and skin coat, these products help to prevent blistering and printthrough.

From its curved three-piece clearview windshield aft, the sides of the deck are expressive, complimented by protruding, elongated fibreglass vent covers. Inside, Chaparral's design team has worked overtime to achieve balance in the contemporary but subtle cockpit. Here, everything has a place. There is room for people to move and to sit, even when the cockpit table is positioned next to the L-shaped aft bench.

Triple French-stitched, 38-ounce expanded vinyl has been used to cover Chaparral's wonderful new Dura-Flex bucket seats. Built-in shock absorbers and lumbar support make for a truly comfortable ride, even when the going gets tough.Around the dock or when some wind in the face is desired, a two-position flip-up front cushion allows for stand-up or sit-down operation. An adjustable high-low pedestal seat is optional, but comes highly recommended.

Chaparral refers to its helm as ergonomic, with cherry-coloured dash accents, silver instrumentation and thumb switches with icons. There is a built-in beverage holder on the dash, conveniently located slightly to the right behind the tilt steering wheel.A JBL marine stereo, 36-can Igloo cooler, snap-in carpet, walk-through transom and a sink with taps built into the passenger side console are just a few of the cockpit's pampering features.

Credit for this boat's performance goes to Chaparral's award-winning extended V-Plane running surface. Planing quickly in 3.5 seconds, and staying there at 20 mph or 2,400 rpm, ultimately results in better fuel economy. Powered by MerCruiser's 350 MAG MPI, the 235 has lots of snap, and pulls from 20 to 40 mph in 7.7 seconds. Midrange pull is more impressive than the sensation of speed indicates, with a 30 to 45 mph acceleration time of nine seconds.

With a standard three-blade, 19" pitch aluminum propeller, the 235 SSi hit a maximum GPS speed of 51 mph at 4,950 rpm, while the speedometer showed 54 mph. Flicking the switch to direct exhaust out the side of the boat had little impact on top speed. Still, the boat sounds "tough"when you want it to.

The 235 SSi tracked perfectly at every speed, turned on command regardless of trim setting, and cut in and out of my arbitrary slalom course without sliding or hooking up at the bow.The boat feels large, deep and safe, a solid rough-water hull with predictable handling.
