2005 Stingray Stingray 250 CR Description
Stingray Powerboats is experiencing a growth spurt.

In financial terms, the independent boatbuilder appears to be gaining a bigger share of its market. In terms of product, its boats are getting larger. In fact, Stingray has introduced its largest cuddy cabin to date. The new-for- 2005 250CR measures an even 25 feet down the centre.

Powered by a 320-hp Volvo Penta 5.7 GXi with twin counter-rotating props on a DuoProp drive, the test boat also has big performance.

Acceleration is great (0-20 mph in under five seconds) and the top speed of 53.6 mph at 5,000 rpm will get you to your favourite picnic place quickly. At 3,400 - 3,500 rpm, the boat will cruise all day at about 30 mph. Between the DuoProp drive and Stingray's hull design, handling is also excellent;the 250 sticks like glue in the corners and tracks solidly in all wave conditions.

Aside from added length, the new 250CR has some additional features not found on former Stingray cuddy cabins. One of the most noteworthy is its extra-large integrated swim platform - conducive for participating in a variety of watersports.Whether you're strapping on a wakeboard or simply lounging with your feet in the water, the added room will be welcome.

The extra-large platform also makes boarding and disembarking easier. Stingray went to the added trouble of tooling the platform so that the retractable three-step is covered, for safety and visual appeal.Another handy feature is the platform's elevated storage locker for quick access to accessories such as ski-ropes, docking lines and fenders. There's also a handy freshwater transom shower.

To increase cockpit sitting room, Stingray did not install a conventional transom door, but cleverly designed what it calls a step-through transom. Steps lead to a notched-out section of the transom, allowing passengers to step-up-and-through.

The design allows the cockpit's Ushaped lounge seat to run the full width of the transom and up each side. Two bucket seats accommodate the pilot and copilot. Ahead of the wraparound bench on the starboard side is a small refreshment centre with a builtin cooler, a couple of drinkholders and a large storage bin. It also includes a dedicated fire extinguisher recess, so you always know where to turn in an emergency.

Ahead of the seat on the port side is another refreshment centre, with a freshwater sink and a small countertop with drinkholders. Beneath it is a recess for storing a 25-quart carry-on cooler. The boat also comes with a portable single-burner butane stove, complete with a carrying case that stows nicely in a recessed tray in the cabin.

The 250CR's cabin makes a nice retreat. The comfortable V-berth can easily accommodate two for overnight stays. Two more can sleep in the cockpit with the filler cushion installed in the wrap-around lounge.A full canvas option is available.

Tucked away beneath the centre portion of the V-berth,but easily accessible, is a small pumpout head, much easier to service than the usual chemical head found in cuddy cabins.

Several other standard features add to the 250CR's value and appeal. A screened hatch and portholes in the cabin let in natural light and ventilation, pop-up cleats provide a sleek hull line, dedicated storage space for cockpit table keeps it out of the way when not used, moulded-in steps to the foredeck make access to the anchor easy and an anchor-roller makes anchoring much easier while protecting the gelcoat. The boat also comes with a Kenwood Hi-Power CD player with remote, a magnetic compass, side window vents and premium vinyls for easy cleanup and stain removal.

One of the most used features, however, may be the MyStingray.com Web site that comes with the purchase of a boat. That will let you show off your new 250CR to all your friends.
