The term "fishing boat" conjures images ranging from an aluminum cartopper to a deep-sea sportfisherman. For 2005, Hydra Sports adds a beauty of a fishing boat to its popular Vector Series - the 2500 VX. From stem to stern, this is a feature-filled fishing machine.
I recently had a chance to check it out on Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada. At the dock, the 2500 VX looks sturdy and well-put-together a boat designed and built to take you fishing and back even if the waves stack up against the current. It has a high freeboard that carries well forward, with the kind of generous flare that makes for a dry ride. The cockpit has a non-skid sole and is self-draining with oversized scuppers to handle generous amounts of water.
The cockpit is rigged for serious offshore action. Four drawers in two compartments offer plenty of tackle storage and other storage compartments are available for larger items. Aft, you'll find a sink and a 26-gallon baitwell, fitted with a light and 1,100- gph pump with overboard drain. Two large insulated fish boxes are at the ready to handle the day's catch. Other features include padded gunnels, stainless- steel beverage holders and courtesy lighting with a convenient switch by the transom door. Another wellthought- out feature is the aft seat with bolster.A nice touch.
Now the helm ahh, the helm! The optional Raymarine C120 Electronics package is front and centre, with a single multifunction unit. The 12-inch colour display features a chartplotter, GPS, and fishfinder. The unit is also radar-ready. Digital Yamaha gauges provide vital engine readouts, including a monitoring system for fuel consumption. Another feature I really like at the helm is the custom aluminum tilt steering wheel, fitted with a robust turning knob.
To get out of the elements, or for weekend trips, the functional cabin offers plenty of room for two.The seating area is spacious and a filler cushion easily converts this area to a double berth. When not in use, the filler cushion stows neatly out of the way in a large area abaft the open steps leading to the cockpit. This area also offers easy access to the battery bank.
Our test boat was fitted with the optional Overnight Package that consists of reverse-cycle heat/air, a hot water heater, marine head with ninegallon holding tank, microwave, dualvoltage refrigerator, 30-amp battery charger, and shorepower connections.
The calm water of Lake Mead is not the ideal spot to put a boat like this through its paces, but I did my best to make some waves. With outboard engine options in single and twin configuration available, our test boat was rigged with a pair of 150-hp Yamaha Four Strokes. Advancing the throttles, we registered a hole shot of 5.8 seconds with a significant amount of bow rise. On plane, the hull felt perfectly at home cruising at 29.5 mph at 4,000 rpm.Through a series of manoeuvres, the hull tracked extremely well with a remarkably stable ride.Wide-open we registered a top speed of 38.6 mph at 5,000 rpm. The 2500's ride was so smooth and comfortable, I could have stayed out all day. With a fuel capacity of 176 gallons, it wouldn't have been a problem.
Plenty of obvious features show that the 2500 VX is a rugged fishing machine. Less obvious signs are the construction methods that include allcomposite (wood-free) construction, premium gelcoat finish and Kevlar reinforcement for the ultimate in durability and protection.
