2005 Campion Campion Allante LX 825i Description
Many boaters get into the cruising lifestyle in a mid-cabin cruiser in the mid-20-foot range. The Campion Allante LX 825i is not only a great entry into the cruising world, but is also big and comfortable enough to make an excellent family cruiser for many years.

The exterior styling of the Allante LX 825i is contemporary with foredeck access through the windshield. This allows the designers to push the cabin out for maximum space belowdecks.

Our test boat came well-equipped to handle docking and anchoring-out, with double bow cleats, midships and stern cleats and the optional windlass and stainless-steel roller package. Night-time manoeuvring is enhanced by Campion's signature built-in docking lights and an optional remote spotlight. The wide integrated swim platform will make docking and entering the boat a snap.

In designing the swim platform and transom, Campion really had swimming and water sports in mind. The transom has an integrated, selfdraining wet storage locker and two large transom lockers for more gear. The designers have thoughtfully located the battery switch in the starboard locker. There's a hot and cold freshwater shower at the transom, along with cupholders and a stainless-steel four-rung swim ladder, complete with a micro-switch to let the captain know the ladder is stowed.

For a 27-foot boat, the cockpit has plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining, with a large curved settee to starboard and a curved transom seat that transitions into a sun-lounge to port. For real sun worshippers, the starboard settee combines with the cockpit table to convert to a large sunpad. When not used to create the sunpad or for al fresco dining, the table, legs and pad stow ingeniously below the cockpit deck.

Plenty of storage space is available under the seats, with a standard cooler tucked below the port lounge.

Time at the helm will be a real pleasure, with a double-wide helm seat and fold-up bolster for standing comfort. The helm is well laid-out, with adequate room for electronics. The layout down below is traditional for a 27-foot mid-cabin cruiser, with galley to port, the head to starboard and a dinette that converts to a V-berth forward. The cabin is light and airy, due to the fibreglass liner, off-beige leatherette upholstery, light wood accents, three screened opening deck hatches and five ports.

The compact galley had a single sink, single-burner stove, microwave and fridge. The head is adequate, with standup room, electric head with macerator and holding tank, vanity and shower. On-board systems can be managed conveniently, via the panel for both shorepower and 12-volt accessories.

The Allante LX 825i is available with several power options, from singles to twin power from both Volvo and MerCruiser,to a maximum of 425 hp. Our test boat, a prototype fresh from Campion's 2005 dealer meeting, was equipped with a MerCruiser 496 MAG and Bravo One drive. While performance was adequate, with a top speed of 43 mph and a comfortable cruise of 26 mph at 3,500 rpm, upgrading to a Bravo Three drive (with twin counter-rotating props) definitely improves time to plane and keeps the power hooked up in turns. Campion has decided that the Bravo One drive will not be available on production boats.

That said, the speeds and acceleration times indicated below are for the LX 825i equipped with a Bravo Three drive. The 45 mph top speed is somewhat better, but the acceleration and overall performance are much improved. With the Bravo Three drive, the boat is up on plane in 4.55 seconds.

Handling is right on the money, with the Apex hull delivering a solid, quiet ride. The tight chop on test day was easy to handle and jumping wakes revealed no creaks or rattles.

As always, the construction quality and fit and finish inside and out are what we have come to expect from Campion Marine. The LX 825i will make a great family cruiser, for starters and for the long haul.
