2001 Sea Doo PWC GTX DI Description
One of the hallmarks of Bombardier’s Sea-Doo division – aside from the fact that it sprang out of Valcourt, Que., to lead the PWC world – has been its ability to develop continually improved personal watercraft. One of the ways it has kept up a blistering pace on the research and development side is that its old boat didn’t just disappear into the sunset.
With few exceptions – such as the HX, which was built to win Sport-division races – Sea-Doo’s old models, once ousted by new ones, simply moved “down the line.”
Recently, that’s changed. The current XP, for example, introduced four years ago and mildly modified since then, is still too hot to move anywhere. The RX series was built on a whole new hull. Same goes for the humongous LRV, another unique vessel.
That leaves the GT series of three-seaters. As for the GTS, it’s built on a hull that is simply too good to lose and is being offered with three different engines (see the review of the GTX DI in this issue).
But instead of leaving the GTS and GTi series boats to malinger, Sea-Doo has done a complete redesign. The GTi has a new hull, based on the RX but about three inches shorter than the GTX, with two “steps” in the bulked-up bow sections, a couple of cutoff strakes running parallel to the hull’s centreline and a couple of “mini-strakes” amidships towards the outside.
Topsides, it’s got a “Cozumel green” paint job, room for three in the saddle and plenty of storage. Power (ideal for towing skiers or wakeboarders) is the reliable carbureted 718-cc 85-hp Rotax. The analog speedo and fuel gauge are adequate for watersports and all-round recreation.
With quick-planing capability (we went from a stop to 30 mph in 4.79 sec.) the boat will indeed make a great tow vehicle. With a top speed of 44.3 mph, it will be fast enough for most riders. In fact, all you give up is the old GTi’s ability to hold extra-tight turns and still handle the steepest waves in comfort. The new GTi’s good looks and great price, however, should make up for it.
