2006 Lund Lund Classic 1660 SS Description
Test day for the new-for-2006 Lund 1660 Classic SS was a cool 7o C with a light but steady east wind producing a slight chop on Lake Joseph in the beautiful Muskoka cottage country area of Ontario.

With the dock area a beehive of haul-out activity, I hopped in and immediately headed out. The Mercury 60hp four stroke outboard started instantly at the turn of the key. No surprise, given the patented EFI system that features an injector in each of the four inline cylinders. I let the outboard warm up for about the time it takes to unhook two lines before I put it into gear. Cruising out, my sound meter read 59 dbA at the helm - the seagulls crying on the far docks were louder!

Our test boat was finished in grey with blue hull graphics, dark grey carpeting and a very fishing-friendly vinyl floor. Forward, two large storage compartments in the floor were also lined in vinyl. To port, underneath two separate carpeted hatches, were a 15 gallon lighted bait well and a non-standard, removable bait bucket. Just aft of the throttle to starboard, under a locking hatch was a vinyl-lined rod storage area. Two folding vinyl seats can be repositioned into 5 different seat bases in the floor.

Lund began building boats in 1948 and over the past fifty-plus years has introduced some rather unique construction methods to their models. Where most manufacturers' hulls meet at the keel in a V-shape, Lund's unique IPS (Integrated Power StrakeTM) hull design uses a long flat area up the keel from the transom to deliver a solid flow of non-turbulent water to the prop. Lund claims the IPS hull's nearly vertical sides and reverse chines create both a wider footprint for faster planing and greater stability, as well as reducing spray for a drier ride and smaller wake. Lund's' interior I-beams (versus rounded ribs of other manufacturers) create both a solid hull and sub-floor with no apparent flex even when pounded into waves. The entire hull is constructed of marine grade H34 aluminum and is twin plated where it takes the most abuse - from the bow to amidships. All this is put together with rivets, which their brochure extols as the most durable and reliable fastening method for high stress applications - like airplanes.

With some notes made, my next task was to put these claims to the test. Just out past the point, I hit the throttle and recorded a hole shot time to plane of 3.6 seconds. Trimming up, I was able to achieve a top speed of 39mph at 6100 rpm, and when I looked back, the wake was indeed almost non-existent. At the helm, running at top speed, my sound meter read only 82 dbA - a level at which it would have been easy to talk to my fishing buddy en route to our next hot spot.

As I ran through our standard cornering tests, I got the sense that the IPS hull would do more than what I was asking it for. So, I ran at top speed, throttled back and pulled a very tight hairpin turn, and then hit it again. Wha-hoo! The 1660's hull turned very tightly with just a hint of stern slippage at the end of the hairpin that made it fun and the 60hp Mercury rocketed me back up onto plane without any suggestion of it being overworked. The unique IPS hull design works - whenever a prop can bite into undisturbed water, the result is always better performance.

But this is first-and-foremost a family fishing boat, and at 29 inches deep the cockpit is perfect for keeping your little fishermen safely inside. Back trolling to unsnag their hook from the bottom isn't a problem either with a 20" transom height. By combining the durability of aluminum, unique hull design features and an electronically fuel injected four stroke Mercury power plant; Lund has created a great all around family fishing package.
