2001 Doral 270 SC Description
Boatbuilders always keep competitors in mind when planning their lineups.
With the introduction of its innovative 25-foot 250 SE two years ago, though, Doral’s 27-foot 270 SC suddenly had some serious competition from its smaller sibling. Among its charms, the 250 SE has an expanding cockpit seat which reputedly gives it the space of a 27-footer.
A sweeping exterior facelift and interior renovation for 2001 promise to give the 270 SC a new lease on life. While some of the exterior changes are cosmetic, others such as the new reverse radar arch and expanding cockpit lounge are also practical and sensible.
The 270’s hull still works like a charm. I drove the test boat, powered by a Mercury MerCruiser 7.4 L MPI sterndrive, on the St. Maurice River in Grand-Mere, Que. The boat’s variable deadrise, dropping to 14.5 degrees at the transom, provides a good combination of comfort and stability.
The twin-prop Bravo Three drive helps the boat accelerate to plane, pushing it from a stop to 20 mph in 7.13 seconds and from 0 to 30 mph in 10.78 seconds. The Bravo Three also pushes the hull through turns crisply and aids close-quarters manoeuvrability.
Top speed, with a half-tank of fuel and only two adults aboard (a light load for a small cruiser) is 42.5 mph on radar, with the speedo showing 45 mph. The boat cruises at 20.9 mph at 3,000 rpm (radar and speedo almost match) and 30.9 mph at 3,500 rpm. In the easy-cruising zone
around 3,200 rpm, the boat perks along at about 25 mph. Very respectable for a 7,100-pound boat powered by a single engine.
The 270’s cruising capability has only been enhanced by the changes in the 2001 model. The spacious cockpit, with a single 180-degree swiveling helm seat and curving lounge in the companion position, now has the sliding and expanding L-shaped lounge aft and to starboard. Add the cockpit table that comes in the Deluxe option package on our test boat (along with wood-finish interior, AM-FM CD player with six-disc changer, cockpit refrigerator and foredeck sunpad) and you’re cruising in style.
In the cabin, the 270 has a classic small-cruiser layout: standup enclosed head aft to starboard, dinette forward of that, galley to port. Forward, instead of a V-berth, a double berth is arranged on the diagonal. It could handle one full-sized adult or two children easily. The dinette will seat two adults and two kids in comfort.
The spacious mid-cabin can be reserved as the master suite. It has a full-sized double bed, opening portlights for cross-ventilation and enough space to store bedding for the entire boat
    in two lockers.
Also new for 2001 is waterproof Sunbrella Sea Mark material on all overhead areas of the convertible top (a rainy test day gave me a chance verify that). The radar arch, of course, gives the top more stability, provides a great place to mount antennae, and helps give the 270 SC its updated appearance
