2006 Doral Doral 170 Sunquest Description
Our boat testing notes say it all; this is the most exciting 38 mph ever.

Fitted with a 90 hp fuel injected Yamaha four stroke, the Doral 170 Sunquest is a distinctive entry into the family cottage and trailer boat segment. Few competitors can match the luxurious appointments and rich upholstery that characterize the Doral and with the 90 hp Yamaha, a light load of fuel and only one person aboard, this boat felt like it had wings.

It's a boat that begs to be driven fast. It's not really that large and the 90 hp engine would normally be seen as a midrange model but this boat is lots of fun to throw around. It has a very light, responsive feel like a Mazda Miata sports car. Out in the bay carving some high speed turns, we found that we could trim the engine down, crank the wheel over to lock and with a little bit of sliding at the stern, the Doral would go right around the tightest turn it could make, still feeling stable. The same high-speed turn would result in some cavitation however, if the motor was left trimmed up. You could over-trim and cause the bow to porpoise but bringing the engine in immediately stopped that.

It felt quite sensitive to the trim position in fact. We constantly found ourselves hitting the trim button to see if we could pick the nose up just a bit more. Without a load of passengers, the boat was solidly planed off and cruising beautifully at 3,500 rpm but it felt to us like the Yamaha wanted to run faster; 4,500 rpm at almost 30 mph is where we expect most people will cruise this combination.

It isn't just the performance that is "sporty". The lines of the boat are also attractive and sleek, with a steeply raked back, low windshield, side panels that extend well aft of the helm position and molded-in swim platforms on either side of the engine at the stern.

The interior is outright luxurious with lots of detail in the upholstery and plush surfaces everywhere. The Doral name is embroidered into the aft bench seat. That seat base lifts to reveal a generous storage area underneath and in the transom area. The cockpit sides have storage and are neatly finished, there is an underfloor storage locker for skis, paddles and other large objects plus more storage under the seats in the bowrider area.

The helm and companion seats are pedestal mounted buckets that slide fore and aft and swivel. Our only complaints about the otherwise excellent interior were the lack of a tilt steering wheel and that the bottom dashboard edge seemed low to us. The sexy, low windshield looks great but for a six-foot driver it's too low, leaving you looking over the glass most of the time. You can adjust the seat to slide down lower but then you are too far from the wheel.

Other excellent features include generous cleats, an anchor locker that is carpeted to protect the hull from abrasion, stainless steel handholds in the bowrider area and a Clarion radio/CD combination concealed under the glove box lid which also protects it from rain.

For family cottaging or trailer boat fun, this 16'10" deep vee delivers thrilling performance and comfortable family accommodation, especially when fitted with the optional Bimini top. The Yamaha is so quiet that even the aft bench seat is a comfortable place for people to ride, the helm and companion seeds are outright luxurious and the bowrider area was also beautifully finished although best sized for children. This is a combination that is easy to love.
