2006 Campion Campion Explorer 552i Sport Description
Can one boat cover off all the things that you may wish to do on the water? Can you fish it? Can you cruise with it? Can you spend a day on the water keeping the whole family happy? Campion believes you can with its Explorer Sport Utility line of boats. They must be doing things right, because we keep seeing more of these boats on the water.

Campion's Explorer line ranges from 5.3 metres (17' 5") to 8.0 metres (25' 8") and the new for 2006 552i fits nicely into the line's offerings of outboard and stern drive powered sedans, sport cabins, walk arounds and centre consoles. With a maximum length of 19' 6" and a beam of 7' 8" the 552i is a trailerable boat for those with larger vehicles.

What sets this boat apart from many combination fishing machines are the comforts Campion has designed into the basic package. From the cuddy cabin to the flexible cockpit seating, the 552i is a cut above a basic fishing machine. While the cuddy isn't large, it offers ample room for two to get out of the sun or to spend a night aboard. The screened deck hatch provides excellent ventilation and the optional Porta-Potti with pump out will increase comfort and extend your time on the water.

Where the versatility of the 552i and the Sport Utility designation really shines through, is in the cockpit. The helm features a swivelling bucket seat, with fore and aft adjustments and armrests for comfort. We were impressed by the excellent outward visibility through the tall windscreen. Front and center on the dashboard panel, our test boat was equipped with full instrumentation, mounted in a new modular dash that integrates the latest in technology and wiring systems. It's an important feature for future accessories and electronics.

The stainless and rubber "sure grip" wheel and optional hydraulic steering are excellent additions as well, and all switches and controls are placed conveniently.

To port, passengers will enjoy the contoured sleeper seat while under way or longing in the sun. Convenient netted storage recesses are built into both cockpit side panels. The port and starboard stern jump seats with optional back rests remove easily and store in the side panels of the self draining cockpit to clear the decks for fishing.

And, fish this boat you will. The 552i incorporates a fish box under the port seat, a live well and rod holder under each gunwale. If you are serious about fishing you can add on the optional, rod holders, bait well, aeration for the live well, a wash down, kicker bracket for your trolling motor and the previously mentioned electronics.

Campion further rounds out this package with a partial swim platform and stainless telescopic ladder, solid stainless cleats and a welded stainless bow rail for greater security going forward when mooring. Once forward, you'll appreciate the aggressive anti-skid pattern, and integrated roller and anchor locker when handling ground tackle.

On the water, the ride and handling of this 19 footer was a real surprise, handling the chop effortlessly and carving turns without fuss. What makes this possible is the Apex hull with 18 degrees of deadrise and reversed chines to dial in the handling. The solid feel comes from the 3Tex woven fabric in the lay up and the Kevlar reinforcing in the hull, making for a laminate that is lighter and stronger.

Performance for the 552i SC was also top notch with the MerCruiser 4.3 L Turn Key Start. With an Alpha 1 drive swinging a 21" Black Max propeller, the 552i topped out at 47 mph cruised comfortably at 3,000 rpm and 26.8 mph.

If you're looking for a fishing boat or family fun machine all in a trailerable package, check out the Explorer 552i Sport Cabin.
