2006 G3 Boats G3 Angler V185 Test Details
| Just west of St. Louis is a community known as Lebanon, Missouri where "friendly people work hard to make things happen". According to Lebanon's tourism board, the fishing is pretty good too.Given that G3 Boats is located there, I now have a better understanding of why this Yamaha owned company takes pride in meeting high quality manufacturing standards. Within the competitive field of aluminum boat building, G3 ranks high. For several reasons, the Angler V185 has become an all-around favorite model - fishermen like it for its notable fishing features and families look at it as a safe and comfortable high-freeboard runabout. Cottagers who make the most of boating's short season will appreciate its deep gunwale and high windshield. For those less-than-stellar weather days, which coincidently greeted us on test day, a full canvas top is available. Fortunately for our team, the skies parted and the rain stopped moments before we clicked the stopwatch for this performance test. Weighing 1610 lbs, the 18-foot Angler was powered by Yamaha's 150 hp four-stroke outboard. Although the boat is rated for a maximum 200 horsepower, the F150 is sufficiently powerful. Given the price of gas these days, a little less power means money in the bank. Heading off into a brisk wind and steady chop, I valued the wide walkthrough windshield for the wind protection it offers. Pushing the throttle down, G3's Angler popped immediately on plane in a scant 2.3 seconds, accelerating to 35 mph in under 6 seconds. Mid-range punch had us hanging on to our hats, shooting from 20 to 45 mph in 13. 91 seconds. Topping out at 49 mph with a full tank of fuel, 50 mph was definitely in the cards. As fast as the boat runs, its ride is what truly impressed us.The hull rises free from the water's surface and while the bow appears to float high, the running attitude is flat. Big waves and wind direction can play havoc with aluminum boats, especially when the engine is trimmed high. Admirably, the Angler tracked true and remained stable in head, following and quartering seas. Cranking the wheel hard over at speed, the Angler leans confidently into a turn, keeping its stern well planted. No hooking or sliding was experienced. The boat feels composed under neutral trim settings and tracks firmly without skipping around - even in the roughest water encountered during our test. The hull's sharp entry forward, combined with a concave spray rail that stretches stem to stern, helps significantly when cutting through waves. When fishing in rough water, anglers should stay reasonably dry - even at low rpm. At higher speeds, the boat responds as it should, with steadfast tracking throughout all manoeuvers. G3 didn't brand this model as the "Angler" without reason. Sporting two casting platforms, two rod storage boxes - one portside and the other in-floor - recirculating live-wells and fold-down fishing seats, there can be no doubt in anyone's mind what primary purpose this boat will serve. Still, many of the boat's features can double for general purpose family needs. Take, for example, the low-maintenance, hose-down floor and gunwale surfaces - great for cottage activities and quick, easy clean-ups. There is plenty of storage space too; open, netted and closed throughout the main and forward cockpit. Sitting behind the contemporary helm you'll find bold analogue instruments, large accessory switches, an in-dash stereo/CD player and a very sporty steering wheel. As smart as the Angler looks, there's beef on those metal bones. Featuring welded construction using .100 gauge marine aluminum, the Angler is built tough. The V-hull itself is double-plated, while a rigid superstructure keeps the boat true for solid, comfortable, worry-free rides. Though G3's Angler V185 does many things well, it is first and foremost a fishing boat. That it can meet a cottager's needs is indeed a bonus - and don't we all appreciate something more than we bargained for. |

Our family of craftsman - from the manufacturing floor to the management staff - are fishermen, just like our customers. Fishermen, who believe in testing and re-testing every component thoroughly before proceeding to the next step and always striving for excellence.
It's all part of the G3 boats advantage and can be found in every component we manufacture. Plus, when you purchase a new boat, motor and trailer as a package, you will be reimbursed for your resident freshwater fishing license for the first three years you own your G3 boat package.
We encourage you to compare quality, price and features available in any other aluminum boat line and then take a look at G3 boats. You won't find better fishing partners than G3 boats and Yamaha.
Quality of G3 boats
A quality boat calls for a quality outboard. And Yamaha is the benchmark by which outboard excellence is measured. Proven technology like advanced microcomputer ignition and Yamaha's state-of-the-art anti-corrosion protection system provides outstanding reliability and dependability day in and day out.
Yamaha just can't leave well enough alone. It continues to reach unprecedented levels of power and performance and then finds ways to take them even higher. Yamaha's OX66 Advanced Fuel Injection Technology, for example, led the way to its new HPDI (High Pressure Direct Injection), which swept the industry's innovation awards. And Yamaha's expanding series of compact and lightweight four-stroke outboards is becoming the preferred choice of more and more anglers, thanks to its clean, quiet, and fuel-efficient performance. When you want the best, look for Yamaha. It's the power behind every G3 boat.
