2006 Glastron Glastron SX 195 Description
Glastron …now here's a name most boaters recognize immediately. Celebrating their 50th anniversary, the years have been kind. Glastron offers, contemporary designs that utilize advanced boat-building processes.

The results are visible in the SX 195, a peppy right-sized bowrider that should fit in well throughout cottage country. Incorporating highly automated closedmold technology known as VEC, the construction process is less messy and labour intensive - and more precise in terms of engineering.

There are hundreds of acronyms used to describe boat building methods, many which serve to confuse the average buyer and lead them into thinking one is better than another. Glastron's VEC however, really works and when combined with "Glastron Lift", the SX 195 surprised me with manoeuverability second to none.

Heading out into a mix of water conditions, we found the boat offered spirited, but solid handling. Under the hatch was a 220 hp 5.0 L Mercruiser, ample stock power for a boat weighing 2785 lbs. I'm quite certain a 4.3 L V6 could adequately move it along, but the extra ponies and cubic inches boost the speed to over 50 mph, 52 to be exact.

Planing in 2.2 seconds, the SX 195 shot like a rocket out of the hole and continued its rapid assent to the top. After recording some fast passes, like 0 to 35 mph in 9 seconds,we timed our mid range runs. Again, the boat sprinted from 25 to 35 mph in 4 seconds and from 25 to 45 mph in 7.8 seconds. Top-speed naturally takes some time to stretch out, yet from plane to full-tilt-boogie, just 15.8 seconds passed by.

Design engineers deserve a hand for creating what has to be one of the quickest planing hulls in this category. What impressed me more was how low the bow stays as the bottom lifts from the water. This boat's angle of attack at speed is flat, even at 16.8 mph which is the slowest the Glastron will run before settling back into the water off plane.

Oh, and did I mention how well the SX 195 turns? I loved the way this hull reacted when I slalomed back and forth outside the wake of our camera boat. Frankly, I felt as comfortable turning the SX 195 as I would turning an inboardpowered towboat. Balance means everything.

Though much of our running was done in sheltered areas protected by islands and the mainland, I was able to find some water rough - at least enough to stir up some decent waves. This is where the rigidity of the hull comes into play. Trimmed at a neutral to a slightly positive setting, the SX 195 feels tight, dissipates waves and cuts through boat wakes with ease.

Back at the pier, I focused on the finer points of construction. Brand new for 2006, the boat is constructed in just two pieces: the entire hull comes from one mold and the deck and cockpit comes from another. A quiet ride is the result of foam-filled cavities.

I wouldn't say the SX 195 is fancy, but it does look crisp and clean. The exterior gel work, graphics and upholstered interior side panels are contemporary in appearance. This Glastron is wider and roomier than typical SX models, which when coupled with its deeper freeboard serves to provide an additional level of security.

The company has learned that storage space is key, thus several under-cushion built-in compartments exist. Passenger friendly, there is adequate leg room for at least eight passengers. By splitting the fullbeam aft lounge into three sections, access to gear is easy, with all draining into the bilge to keep things dry. Naturally the boat has a nice stereo system, installed neatly inside the massive glove compartment.

With smartly upholstered bucket seats and a wide, plush sun pad, the Glastron SX 195 feels luxurious for a value-placed sportboat. With quality amenities representative of its class, the new SX 195's most distinguishing feature is truly its confident ride and outstanding handling. After 50 years, would you expect anything less?
