2006 Four Winns Four Winns 190 Horizon Description
Looking for the ideal family fun boat? Then consider the all-new Four Winns 190 Horizon. A perennial best-seller in the Four Winns line, the 190 Horizon has been re-designed for 2006.

This new model is 18'6", but thanks to Four Winns' knack for engineering cockpit space, it feels larger. Its performance as an all 'round family boat is enhanced by the MerCruiser 4.3 L MPI engine. It brings a solid turn of speed and water sports enthusiasts will appreciate the effortless acceleration.

We saw a top speed of 47 mph and a good 0 to 30 mph of 6.6 seconds, indicating there is plenty of power and speed for skiers and wake boarders. The new hull design cruised best at about 3,000 and yet would plane solidly at 2,500 and 21 mph for what is probably best fuel economy. Handling was a bit heavy at the helm but the Four Winns 190 Horizon felt solid and tracked straight even crisscrossing other boats wakes. It handled our moderate weather with confidence and will be a solid performer on lakes, bays and rivers.

The lines are contemporary and features attractive hull side graphics enhancing graceful yet sporty lines. Exterior features include stainless steel fittings with pop-up cleats and sturdy handholds. At the bow, these are integrated into the upper edge of the gunnels and add to the sleek styling of this boat. Typical of bowrider designs, the 190 has a walkthrough windshield. The opening is wide enough to prevent being skewered by the windshield edges as you pass through. The deck has a non-skid surface in key areas.

In the interior, a full snap-in carpet is available as an option and it makes for easy clean up after a day at a sandy beach or around a muddy launch ramp. The bow seats wrap around with especially soft upholstery. Four Winns says their vinyl is unique with its own name; Aquaflex.

As you would expect, there is storage beneath the bow seats and they are hinged, so they won't come loose at high speed or during rough seas. This is a nearfifty mile per hour boat and speeds like that over an unexpected roller can send you skyward! The storage compartments are fully lined and drained too. Under the bow seat is storage for ground tackle - another useful feature for picnic trips or swimming.

The main cockpit has seating for five with a swivel bucket helm seat that adjusts fore and aft, a back to back companion seat and two aft jump seats. The helm is attractively laid out with black on white gauges with chrome bezels, all mounted in a high-tech turned-metal looking dash fascia. Lighted rocker switches control the lights and accessories and a thickly padded tilt steering wheel is standard.

The companion seat accommodates boat a forward and rear facing passenger. That is handy for skiing and the seat also folds out to form a sun lounge. The passenger side dash board includes a large compartment with room for personal belongings and it also protects the stereo system from rain damage. Unlike many boats in this class, the glove box is lockable.

Four Winns has added some innovative thinking as well. At the stern are two jump seats that flank the engine cover and they can be positioned in three different ways. They can be used as seats mounted low, or flipped over to serve as a handy step for getting aboard, as the opposite side of the cushion is finished with a non-skid surface. Then, the jump seats can also be installed at a higher position that matches the height of the pad on the engine cover. This position makes up a full-width sun pad across the stern.

Overall, the 2006 Four Winns 190 Horizon delivers solid value in a quality 18-foot bowrider. It has numerous upscale features, a spacious cockpit and great fit and finish with materials that should stand up to family use, season after season.
