2006 Chaparral Chaparral 190 BR SSi Description
Chaparral's 190 SSi competes in the toughest division in the league. Eighteen to twenty foot bowriders are Everyman's craft. The perfect cottage boat, they are easily trailered, they haul kids and cargo, pull wakeboarders, spend hours trolling, sight-seeing and cruising. Plus, they must be easy to handle, safe, seaworthy - and fun to drive!

Value is a critical feature. A small bowrider is often an individual's introduction to boat ownership and manufacturers know that if a customer is happy with their first boat, they'll likely trade up within the brand. "Value-minded" is Chaparral's description of the 190, adding "No shortcuts here, we wouldn't dare."

The first thing we noticed at dockside was the full fibreglass inner liner, from engine box to bow cockpit, with a big ski locker built in along the way. Done up in shiny gel coat with easy to clean diamond non-skid on the floor, the constant-draining liner adds rigidity and sound insulation to the already solid and quiet-running hull.

Gleaming, colour-coordinated fibreglass was also chosen for the modular helm and passenger consoles. No cheezy plastic. The consoles are full-featured, with a little insulated ice chest and a glove box built into the port side and a handsome, efficient dash layout to starboard. Woodgrain accents and Chaparral's own gauges spice up the pilot's station.

The next detail that caught our attention was the comfort of the seats. Our test boat came with the optional Sport interior, front buckets and a wide stern bench. Too often, we've encountered bucket seats that looked great but failed to deliver. Chaparral's thrones fit the human form perfectly, providing cushioning and support where it's needed. Countering another pet peeve, the seats' flip-up bolsters are large enough, adding an adequate boost for over-the-windshield viewing. Nor did the rear bench fail to please. Just two simple cushions, but their placement, coupled with an ideal foam density, creates a comfy, safe place to sit.

(Standard seating includes a pair of back-to-backs that will fold down to form loungers plus two jump seats on either side of the motor box.)

The spaciousness of the main cockpit gave rise to suspicions about the size of the bow area - which were born out by time spent riding up front. The open bow is smallish, room for two at best, but it has been well thought out. The upholstery is properly shaped and positioned. The cupholders and stainless grab handles are just where they should be. There is storage below each side seat and the front cushion hides an ice chest. At the prow, a locking compartment holds the anchor.

All that said, the discovery of one little feature underscored the many quality touches that have made Chapparal boats popular. Opening the windshield's passthru we looked for a latch that would hold the glass panel in place. No latch. No complicated, fingernail-breaking mechanism. It's a magnet! Elegantly simple and it works!

So does Chaparral's Extended VPlane hull. Incorporating a smooth vee at the keel assisted by reversed chines and a single long strake on each side, the bottom is uncomplicated by trick vents or Band-aid planning assists. Instead, Chaparral has extended the surface back past the transom on either side of the drive. From rest, the extra surface adds lift and the 190 comes on plane with minimal bow rise. At speed, the hull sits down and runs level, smoothly dealing with the waves and maintaining its course. The Chaparral's straight-line directional stability doesn't interfere with its turning ability. Not only did it track around without sliding during spirited slaloming, but the fun factor was obvious.

Our enjoyment was enhanced by the enthusiastic contribution of the 4.3L MerCruiser. The little V6 is the perfect match for this boat, the carbureted 190 hp version offering solid 45 mph performance at a "value-minded" price. Spend somewhat more for the MPI 220 hp and a stainless prop and you might see 55.
