2006 Scout Scout 205 Dorado Description
Scout is a boat company that has earned a reputation for pioneering new processes and improving the breed. For more than a decade, Scout has been targeting established builders of center-consoles, walk-arounds, flats and bay-boats. More recently, they've launched some mighty fine fish-n-ski models.

The 205 Dorado, introduced last year, is a carpet-free, low maintenance bowrider designed for multiple activities. I'm generally not big on boats dubbed "fish-n-ski" because they tend to be fishing boats with add-ons for skiing. The Dorado on the other hand is purposebuilt to fish and ski from, with minimal compromise in comfort.

Though I call it a bowrider, the bow really serves two purposes. For watersports and cruising, the padded seat forward is plush and luxurious. For fishing, simply remove the seat pad to reveal a casting platform. In the main cockpit, the non-skid floor provides security to stand-up anglers. Aft, an optional transom platform can be installed and by removing the upholstered stern seat/wavegate, fishing over the transom is simplified.

The 205 Dorado is stylish, spacious and the wide beam makes it seem larger than 20 feet. I felt sure-footed walking about to inspect the many built-in storage areas. Two compartments are integrated into the aft deck. On the port side is a live well and to starboard is access to batteries and pumps. A large anchor locker is found in the bow. Being of dual-console design, both consoles have their own separate lockers, with the operator's side featuring shelves.

Anglers take note of the 205's six stainless steel flush mounted rod holders - two at 30 degrees and four vertical. Your family will appreciate the raw water wash down for instant clean-ups after a day of catching fish.

Skiers won't feel left out. Our test boat incorporated a stainless steel tow bar which mounted firmly into place at the transom. There is also a massive infloor locker on centerline to house your choice of watertoys. If you don't happen to ski, it can be used as a fish box.

For those into cruising, a widewalk- thru windshield offers plenty of protection from the wind. The helm is very well organized, with a built-in beverage holder and compass to starboard, stainless-steel captain's wheel, Yamaha digital instrumentation and a seethrough compartment door where charts, electronics and miscellaneous gear can be stowed. The captain's chair is very comfortable and the passenger's seat pulls out into a full sun-lounge.

Like every Scout, the Dorado is put together using a reverse-shoebox hull and deck design in order to keep water out of joints in rough conditions. Should it find its way in (and it always will), the boat has composite stringers and is free of wood. Overall we found the fit and finish to be excellent.

Out on the water, we put the Dorado's "Air Assist" hull to the test. According to Scout, the boat has more longitudinal stability which improves planing and general handling. With Yamaha's 150 horsepower four-stroke outboard bolted to the transom, I would agree that a 3-second hole shot is indeed fast. Acceleration throughout the engine's powerband is very impressive. The 205 hits 25 mph in just over 4 seconds, 35 mph in 5.8 seconds and maxes out at 47.4 mph in just over 15 seconds. When gunned at 25 mph, the Dorado takes just 5.5 seconds to hit 40 mph on GPS.

Tracking perfectly in a straight line, the Dorado responds positively to trim settings and turns on command at every speed. It also likes rough water. We purposely stirred up some waves to see how it would react to a stiff quartering beam sea. The boat didn't jump around and appears to absorb wave impacts well.

Being a cottager, fisherman and advocate of water sports, I know this style of boat would serve my family well. Since testing my first Scout back in the mid-90s, I've always considered them to be a strong contender. Now I'm sure of it.
