2006 Bennington Bennington Sedona 21 Description
About a year ago, Bennington Marine, a premier manufacturer of pontoon boats in the US, decided to brand a line of their boats under the name Sedona, to serve as an entry-level boat that wouldn't compromise the marketing position of their upscale Bennington line.

We tested the Sedona 21 model and felt that it didn't give up very much to achieve its entry-level status. The basic foundation for almost all pontoon boats is a pair of welded aluminum pontoons and the Sedona has 23 inch diameter tubes as standard. Our test boat was fitted with the more expensive and superior 25 inch size. The tubes are fitted with nose cones and spray deflectors to handle waves and weather better. Like most pontoon boats, the Sedona uses a plywood floor and Bennington uses 3 inch cross channels and stainless steel bolts to withstand corrosion better.

It has the usual painted aluminum sides with anodized rails and the design leaves about 2 feet of deck at the stern for swimming and perhaps a foot and a half at the bow using the remainder of its 20 foot deck length devoted to interior accommodation. This boat has four different entry gates; a bow gate, port and starboard side gates and an aft gate to the swim platform and ladder. The helm is well equipped if not luxurious, with space under the binnacle, an attractive but basic steering wheel (no tilt), AM/FM/CD stereo, Plexiglas wind deflector and basic instruments; tachometer, fuel gauge and trim indicator.

The capacity plate on the Sedona 21 indicates that it is rated to carry up to 13 passengers or 1800 pounds of cargo. Opposite the helm is an Lshaped settee along the port side and across the stern. The forward end is angled as a sun lounge and conveniently positioned so that the driver and passenger can chat as they go. A removable picnic table fits into this area and as you would expect, there is liberal storage underneath the seat bases. The seats are nicely finished and plastic rather than wood which will help to ward off rot. Across the stern is a sun pad that could be a diving platform and underneath, it is the storage for the fuel tank and batteries. This also serves to isolate engine sound.

Upfront, are a pair of double seats and both have angled sun lounge back rests. Again, there is storage underneath and the entire interior floor is finished in 20 ounce carpet. The carpet is permanently mounted however, not a snap-in type. Other features include a 36 can soft cooler, a 9 foot Bimini top equipped with quick release fittings and solid front struts, a concealed waste basket storage area, fire extinguisher and a heavy-duty deep reach swim ladder.

Our test boat had the optional 25 inch diameter pontoon upgrade and other available options include a bench seat live well, docking lights, a privacy enclosure and a Porta-Potti. Power choices up to 90 hp can be accommodated but the beauty of a pontoon boat is that even relatively low power can deliver good performance. Our test boat was fitted with the Yamaha 50 hp four stroke driving a 14" x 11" three blade aluminum prop. It's a sweet running engine and with help from the padded engine cover, we recorded only 72 dbA at idle and a maximum of 81 dbA at full speed; very smooth and quiet. At the top speed of 5,500 rpm, the Sedona 21 was traveling just over 18 mph. This isn't fast enough for waterskiing but it would be great for pulling tubes and the acceleration was strong enough to easily move a full load of family and friends.

Compared to many pontoon boats that we have driven, the Sedona 21 handled nicely at all speeds and we felt the passengers would always feel comfortable aboard the Sedona 21.
