2006 Crownline Crownline 260 LS Description
In a world where consumers demand the best possible product at the lowest possible price, continually making improvements and introducing new models is a real challenge. Those that choose to rest are soon left in the wake of others who move forward with the times.

Crownline Boats of West Frankfort, Illinois is one builder leading the charge by introducing new features and bigger boats to increase their market share. Not every Crownline model for 2006 boasts a significant change, but those that do are spectacular.

Crownline's 260 LS is one of those, built from the ground up with a brand new hull and deck. Bowriders continue to enjoy popularity in cottage country and with affluence has come a preference for larger craft, a niche that several of North America's premium manufacturers are jumping on.

Measuring 26' 6" in length, with a beam of 102", older boathouses may need to be renovated to accommodate this boat. While obtaining a permit could present a hassle, let's just say "it's worth it".

This boat's features put the 260 into a category where few builders play. How many bowriders have you seen with a porcelain head placed in its own enclosed compartment large enough for a sink, electric exhaust vent, shower and vanity? A head makes good sense when cruising for hours at a time.

What appeals to me most is the bow seating arrangement. Port and starboard are two spine-shaped lounges that Crownline refers to as "Hot-Tub" seats. Stretch out on these, flip-up the optional armrest and bingo, you're there for a while.

At the opposite end of the 260 is an extended swim platform and a rather unique engine compartment cover that conceals a huge storage space for miscellaneous gear and the cockpit table. The aft platform actually folds down flat offering ample room to sunbathe with the security of a foot rail. It's like having a double bed aboard.

Entering the cockpit from the stern, one can pick either side to walk through by simply lifting out the appropriate seat-back. Upholstery work is performed in-house, and both the operator and companion passenger enjoy bolster-style seating with depression- less bottoms and stainless-steel springs. Both offer a cushioned ride with Tri-Tech suspensions.

The oversized windshield is both structural and stylish, profiled into the curves of the deck. Of note was the effort taken to smooth out welds, integrating the windshield's supports and frame. I could ramble on about details like docking lights molded into the hull, extra-large pop-up cleats, lockable hatches, full-length hinges on cushions, a quick-pull pin for emergency manual hatch access and troughs that route water outside of the boat where it belongs. Still,my kicks come from what any passenger would consider a great ride.

Here's the scoop; the 260 LS incorporates Crownline's exclusive F.A.S.T. Tab (Fin Assisted Safe Turn) hull for proven performance. MerCruiser's MX 6.2 MPI puts out 320 hp and is well suited to this boat. Accelerating to plane in 4.2 seconds, the 260 LS remains there at 19 mph without fear of settling in. Going from 0 to 35 mph takes 10 seconds, quite respectable for a near 6,000 LB boat.

With a boat full of people, the 260 LS cruises efficiently at 3,500 RPM or 30 mph. When you want to give it a shot of power, push the throttle down for a 9 second sprint to 46 mph. Keep trimming up and the 260 maxes out just a few seconds later.

On the limit at 5,200 rpm, this boldly styled Crownline reached 50 mph on the nose. At that speed, I could trim pretty well wherever I wanted and still carve a tight turn. The ride, though soft and steady, isn't what I'd call mushy - I could feel the bottom working its magic and hanging firm in the roughest water I could find. For big grins on big water days, Crownline's 260 LS may be just the ticket.
