2006 Harbercraft Harbercraft 2525 Kingfisher Description
When the going gets tough, it's comforting to own a vessel built for extreme conditions.

Harbercraft of Vernon, BC, manufactures a full range of premium all-welded aluminum boats that are in their own words, "race-inspired, quality-built". Though the 2525 Kingfisher Cruiser looks anything but racy, it does incorporate technology that has been torture-tested on the competitive jet-boat circuit.

By flexing components and prebending their hulls in advance of final welding procedures, Harbercraft found they could reduce the amount of vibration commonly associated with aluminum boats. The process known as Pre-Flex not only makes the boat stronger, it serves to eliminate heat distortion and warping of the metal.

A steel jig system is used to ensure the hull is properly formed which ultimately translates into higher performance and efficiency as the boat glides through the water. Although it's difficult to prove Harbercraft's claim, I can say how well the boat ran during our test on a cold and windy, choppy water day.

Having tested this model previously with a Yamaha 300 horsepower HPDI, I was interested to see how well a fourstroke 200 horsepower outboard would perform. By eliminating 100 horsepower, our top speed was reduced by a mere 3 mph, illustrating the power of Yamaha's new F200 TXR.

Propping helps too. Swinging a 17" pitch 3-blade Yamaha Saltwater series prop, the F200 turned 6000 rpm compared to 5500 rpm by the 2-stroke 300 HPDI. The boat naturally took longer to accelerate with less power, but considering we were also burning less fuel, I'd think most people can live with that.

The 2525 planes with minimal bow rise and starts cruising at an efficient speed of 23 mph, turning 4000 rpm.Taking 10.8 seconds to reach 30 mph and 14.7 to hit 35 mph, we recorded a top speed of 43 mph after doing some mid-range to full-throttle timing runs. Once on plane at 17 mph, I throttled down to reach 35 mph in slightly more than 10 seconds. Solid performance numbers all around.

Harbercraft's 2525 is a pleasure to drive in rough water. As hard as I tried to make it pound, the 18 degree variable deadrise bottom simply cut through big waves and cross wakes, absorbing impacts without transfer of energy to the boat's passengers. In fact, the 2525 comes prepared for ocean and great lake conditions with a shock-absorbing suspension helm seat for the operator.

Whether for cruising or fishing, the 2525 Kingfisher is a shelter for mariners, ancient or otherwise. When rain poured down on test day, its pilot house became mission control for boat handlers and fair weather journalists.Naturally the B&P test team kept on working!

Protection from the elements is only part of this boat's charm. Decked out with stylish yet understated amenities, the Harbercraft is quite serviceable. Zolatone, a durable, cleanable and spot repairable finish, has been applied to top deck and cabin surfaces. Inside we found a vinyl floor and carpeted sides, while outside the aft deck is self bailing.

The Weekender Package includes a granite laminate dinette with ice box, storage and convertible berth. It's not what I'd call lavish, but the décor has been warmed up and visually enhanced by finely finished wood cabinetry and comfortable seats. Practical features like a stand-up flush head with a 20-gal holding tank, sink, optional alcohol stove, fridge and Wallas 125DU Deisel Stove/heater make the boat very livable.

Being a deep water fishing vessel, Harbercraft has thoughtfully designed a fish locker into the cockpit floor complete with macerator pump out. There is also a cleverly crafted fish storage compartment with a cutting board aft. Our test boat came with a Yamaha F8, 8 hp four-stroke portable/ kicker and an aft cockpit helm yet to be rigged.

With a boat like this, one can look forward to foul weather days. If you happen to live in a region where it's cool and rainy, this could be the answer to a much extended boating season.
