2006 Ebbtide Ebbtide 2600 Cuddy Bowrider Description
Our first look at Ebbtide's 2600 prompted Diana's description: "understated elegance". The prow is high and pointed, reminiscent of a performance boat's, but there are no flashy taped-on graphics. Instead, the subtle striping is part of the gel coat and the sweep of the sides is emphasized by contoured feature lines that are molded in. That level of design typifies the awardwinning depth of quality in the Ebbtides - an attention to innovative detail made possible by the company's small-volume, hand-laid production.

Not so long ago, any boat with a footprint over twenty feet long came with a closed bow and often with a simple veebench cuddy cabin. Twenty-six footers were considered large enough to be outfitted as a "cruiser". More recently, although the popularity of the bigger bowrider has exploded, the convenient comfort and privacy of the cuddy continues to appeal. The idea of combining the two concepts in a larger hull design has been tried before, resulting in an unfortunate compromise that typically left the cuddy dark, cramped and claustrophobic. Luckily, Ebbtide's new flagship is a happy surprise.

Operating with a generous overall length and an 8 foot beam, Ebbtide owner and chief designer Tom Trabue has minimized the bow cockpit in favour of an adequate cabin. Not that the bow area is wanting. There's plenty of room for three to sit or two to lounge in wellcushioned, open-air comfort. Although the bow can be accessed in the traditional way, through the windshield via steps molded into the helm bulkhead, it can also be reached through a passageway that opens at the forward end of the cuddy cabin.

That doorway is part of the cuddy's success, offering light, air, a view of the sky and a chance to socialize with the bow's riders. The aft entrance, a large sliding door on the port side of the helm, presents similar access for residents of the rear cockpit. Space subtracted for the cabin also hasn't diminished the stern area. The comfortable U-shaped seating is in proportion with a boat of this size with room remaining for a bar sink and a command- centre helm station. Inside, the cuddy features bench seats on either side that can be a table or can be bridged to form a roomy bed. Headroom above the seats/bed is ample, about four feet (1.22m). The area is equipped with a pullout Port-A-Potty and the Overnight option adds a microwave, flat-screen TV and even provisions for air conditioning. When closed in, hatches and vents provide fresh air and there's plenty of lighting. Nevertheless, spending the night in any cuddy is for the adventurous. It's camping by another name. That said, this cuddy's bed is the most welcoming we've seen.

Although no fault of the boat, our performance tests produced mixed results. The day was hot and clear, but a brisk wind had whipped up a teeth-rattling chop. In a lesser craft we would have headed back to the dock. The deep-vee Ebbtide persevered and we quickly determined that even in nasty conditions, the large hull carved its turns, hanging on to the water like a much smaller boat.

Unfortunately, a break-in at the marina had taken the original drive and the only available replacement proved to have the wrong gearing and too short a pitch. As a result, the heavy 26 footer set off with great enthusiasm, accelerating until the engine slammed against the rev limiter. Thus, our launch times are overly optimistic and the top speed isn't even close.

Luckily, this Ebbtide has received plenty of attention in the boating media; it is perhaps the most tested boat of the season. Some time spent on the internet and a couple of phone calls established that a properly rigged 2600 with a 496 and Bravo One will accelerate to 30 mph in less than 10 sec. With the Captain's Choice exhaust open it will reach 60 mph. None too shabby for a boat that's both bed and bowrider!
