2006 Wellcraft Wellcraft 330 Coastal Description
The Wellcraft 330 Coastal is not your average Great Lakes fishing boat. A quick review reveals a serious fishing boat with its optional upper station tower, numerous fishing amenities such as aluminum rod holders behind the helm, large in-floor fish boxes, live aerated bait well with cutting board behind the helm seat and behind the passenger seat, a couple of large built in tackle boxes with a fish cleaning station above them.

The 330 Coastal with its large beam of 12.5 feet has a cockpit area large enough for 3 to 4 fisherman to fish from, especially when you take out the removable bench seat across the back of the cockpit area. Both the helm and passenger seat are wide enough to hold two adults comfortably.Around the cockpit there are numerous beverage holders, courtesy lights and built in storage areas for tackle, fishing rods and fishing gear.

The tackle center on the port side has storage and a freshwater wash down system. The helm station, equipped with all the necessary controls for the twin Volvos, also includes plenty of space around the dash for radar to be installed and above, attached to the hardtop, is a lockable compartment for radios. The 330 Coastal we tested was equipped with a number of optional packages including a 5kw diesel generator, air conditioner and stereo upgrade package which included a cockpit subwoofer, power amplifier, two additional speakers and a cabin crossover amplifier.

The second station tower package included electronic controls, (electronic controls were also on the lower station) full instrumentation and lots of room for adding electronics if desired. Handling the boat from the upper station is best, especially when docking because you have a 360 degree unobstructed view that really helps in the tight spots.

The cabin has a full fibreglass liner with a snap-in carpet. The cabin is complete with all the usual amenities including a galley featuring a coffeemaker, microwave, refrigerator, 2 burner stove and sink. The cabin is laid out with a large v berth and a dinette table which converts to a berth.

The Wellcraft 330 Coastal is laid out as a serious fishing boat with a functional cabin to enjoy your time on the water whether you are out for a serious day of fishing or cruising the waterways with your family.

We were cruising the St Clair River near Sarnia with Guy Andali of Precision Power Sports, my host for the day. I expected the 330 Coastal to be a bit sluggish compared to many of the smaller boats I have been driving this year because of its sheer size and weight.

From a standing start the 330 Coastal comes out of the water at the expected rate (fairly slow) until the turbo kicks in at about 1200 rpms. When the turbo boost comes on, you can actually feel the boat lurch forward and the acceleration is very noticeable as we raced from 0 to 20mph in 8.23 seconds. With the big 23" Nibral props and the turbos spinning, the twin Volvo D6 - 370s ( 370hp) engines accelerated the boat to a top speed of 33.8mph.

We motored down the river taking in the scenery on the United States side as well as the Canadian side but we were careful not to get too close to the US as border security might attract a visit from customs. We put the boat through a number of turns at various speeds. The wide beam carved through the water effortlessly. Unfortunately, the conditions were such that the water was calm and did not afford an opportunity to see how the boat performed in rougher conditions. I am sure with the wide beam and heavy weight, the Coastal 330 would handle most conditions the Great Lakes could serve up.

The 330 Coastal offers a balance of fishing functionality and cruising comforts found in few 33 foot fishing boats.
