2007 Four Winns 378 Vista Description
One of the most exciting developments

in boating in recent memory has been

Volvo's introduction of its IPS propulsion

system, and one of the first boat manufacturers

to offer these drives was Four Winns.

The Four Winns 378 Vista is a big handsome

express cruiser with a very competitive list of features

and solid performance in the "normal"

inboard version. But the test boat was equipped

with twin IPS 400 Volvo diesels and the performance

was most impressive. So much so, we all

agreed these new drives will truly change the face

    of boating for many people.

We found the big Volvo diesels planed the 378

Vista off in 8.5 seconds, cruised at 2500 doing 20

mph and topped out at an impressive 36.7 mph.

The boat tracked like an arrow and responded to

the helm like a sport boat, banking aggressively

into turns and with the props always hooked up.

In fact, the boat lost little revs or speed, even in

tight turns. The powered steering system is finger

light and the boat drives like a car.

Where you will fall in love with the IPS system

is docking. Our test boat had the joystick control.

When it comes time to dock, you shift into neutral,

press one of two buttons for slow or fast idle

then control the boat using the joystick. Push it

forward, the boat moves forward. Pull back, the

boat reverses. Twisting the top knob makes the

boat spin literally in its own length. The most

remarkable feature is that you can push the lever

sideways and the IPS drives move the boat sideways

directly into a dock space. It is intuitive, simple

and you can even hold the boat against the

    dock in high winds.

    Simply amazing.

But let's not overlook the Four Winns 378

Vista itself. The 378 has a very handsome helm

arrangement with full instruments, a Danforth

compass, marine CD system and more. Our test

boat had Raymarine VHF, autopilot and

    Raymarine C80 navigation electronics.

The double width helm seat adjusts and there's

a double companion seat so the whole family can

    sit together.

The cockpit has wrap-around bench seating,

foot lighting, stereo speakers and removable carpeting.

There is a small engine room inspection hatch

or the electric lift opens up a large section. To port

is a refreshment centre with sink, water, shore

power and fridge - very handy.

The companionway leads into the salon and

the galley lies ahead with coffee maker, Kenyon

two-burner stove, sink, Kenmore microwave and

    side-by-side refrigerator and freezer. Countertops

are composite and all the trim is cherrywood.

To starboard is a conversation pit that turns

into a dinette and has a privacy curtain to

become an aft cabin. A neat feature is the electric

sofa that converts to a berth at the touch of a button.

The head is spacious with enclosed shower

stall and vacuum/head system. The forward V

berth is the master. It has an irregular shape, but

is offers substantial sleeping area. You get reverse

cycle heat and A/C, two different flat screen televisions

    and far more.

The 378 Vista is a very competitive entry in

this market segment and with the Volvo IPS system

it becomes something quite remarkable with

performance that is sure to delight its owner.
