2007 Mainship 34 Trawler Description
More and more people are looking at

the relaxing pace of cruising in a

trawler because this type of vessel

delivers a unique combination of seaworthiness,

comfort and space in a fuel-efficient package.

However, there are times you need to cover a

distance more quickly than at eight knots. For

that, we now have trawlers like the Mainship 34 -

designed with more support in the aft hull sections,

equipped with more power and capable of

full planing speeds of over 20 mph.

In fact, the test boat ran up to 3750 rpm

doing 24.4 mph. By putting a little tab down, we

could back off to an 18.5 mph cruising speed at

3250 rpm, with a very livable 89 dbA sound level

in the salon. That is impressively quiet for the performance.

The twin 240 hp Yanmar diesels make

manoeuvring the Mainship 34 easy at dockside

and there is a full keel for accurate tracking. The

Mainship has a pocket drive design for a shallow

    draft, too.

The styling on the Mainship 34 is traditional

and the exterior is as much meant for living as the

interior. You normally come on board through

the proper transom door from the swim platform.

The cockpit area is not very large, but has

high sides and shade from the bridge overhang

makes a great spot to put out a couple of deck

    chairs.

Most days will be spent on the flying bridge.

The first three steps in the staircase up to the

bridge lift for access to the engine room. The flying

bridge is very large for this size of boat. There is an

L-shaped seat on the port side that's wide enough

to be a sunbed with a large amount of storage

under the cushions. There are also three swivel

    seats for helm and companions.

The upper helm on the test boat had twin

Raymarine C80 screens for radar, as well as a chart

plotter, autopilot, VHF radio, Danforth compass,

electrically controlled spotlight, controls for the

electric windlass and JVC audio system. The

Yanmars were equipped with ZF electronic controls.

Chart tables on either side flank the dashboard

and the layout is comfortable for standing or

sitting operation. Our test boat had the optional

Bimini top and full enclosure. A fold-up picnic

table is included as is a pedestal-mounted Magma

    barbecue and cutting board.

For bad weather, there is a lower helm station

in the salon. The side windows are very large, slide

open and have screens. There is a high-low table

and two attractive wicker chairs to create a dining

area for up to six people. An entertainment system

and the electrical panel are by the bulkhead.

The Mainship 34 has the galley equipped with

a microwave, two large under floor lockers, a

    refrigerator, a generous sink, a two-burner stove

    and Corian countertops.

The forward cabin has a shaped twin birth in

the centre with very good access on both sides,

making it easy to make the bed. Ventilation is

through two portholes and an overhead hatch.

The cedar-lined locker is modestly sized, but there's

a bit more storage as well.

The Mainship Trawler 34 has a spacious head

with enclosed shower stall, opening porthole, sink

    and a vanity.

Mainship's idea with this model was to design

a reasonably sized cruising yacht that would be efficient

to operate while delivering livable accommodations

for extended cruises for a couple who may

occasionally have guests on board. I think they succeeded.
