2001 Harbercraft Kingfisher 2225 Description
You could tell that the men swarming the dock at the Yamaha dealer meeting  in St. Catharines, Ont., loved the new Kingfisher 2225. They were lining up two-deep for a chance to ride in the aluminum-hulled 21-footer.
They obviously like the magical way Harbercraft, the Vernon, B.C., boatbuilder, creates an aluminum hull. When you look at this boat  in the water, you assume it’s fibreglass, not metal. There are no apparent welds, rivets or seams. What you also can’t see is the boat’s unique bottom design. Built with pre-flex technology for a stronger, lighter hull, the bottom features a reverse chine and delta keel for sharp turns, a quick planing time and the ability to get up there with less power.
Our test boat was powered by a Yamaha 200 outboard with high pressure direct injection. The 1,600-lb. craft jumped up on plane at about 2,500 rpm. At 4,000 rpm it cruised at about 37 mph. Full speed was 55.3 mph with 5,700 showing on the tach.
As for handling, it was a little stiff without hydraulic steering (an option), but the boat definitely felt nimble.
That’s no coincidence. Harbercraft is deeply involved in river jet-boat racing. If they can build a 21-foot aluminum race boat that can handle the twists and turns of a  meandering river, fly up to 115 mph and hold together even when ricocheting off rocks, you know Harbercraft has the quality construction quotient down pat.
But all the excitement doesn’t end at the bottom. The boy’s club is bound to be tickled by the 2225’s cockpit design and the boat’s wide open back deck.
They’ll also love the way the Kingfisher can be customized. The 2225 comes with a full-width engine bracket so you can mount twins or an auxiliary motor. Our test boat had an eight-hp Yamaha bolted on for economical trolling. Three cutting boards are pos-itioned across the transom and there’s prefab fish storage; just ask for the pumps. Locking rod storage? Just say the word. A Porta-potti in the cuddy? Speak up, and it’s yours.
Fishing doesn’t have to be your main focus to get a kick out of the 2225. With its sharp entry, the Harbercraft is ideal for big water. The ride is com-fortable in the two deluxe pilot chairs. There are even footrests mounted to the seat boxes so that your legs don’t just dangle. The helm is basic, obviously waiting for your electronic toys.
What sets this boat apart from its Harbercraft brethren is the walkout day cuddy. The 2225 version has enough space for a couple of adults to curl up in and catch a cat-nap. A Bomar hatch, two side widows and twin lamps provide illumination. It’s no Ritz Carlton, but it gets the job done.
Simplicity is pretty much the name of the game in the 2225, which  is why most men are sure to love it. The boat’s a no-frills hard worker for people who want to get back to the basics.
