2007 Pursuit OS285 Offshore Description
In case you haven't noticed, generously sized

offshore-style fishing boats are rising in popularity

faster than lake weeds grow in the summer.

Longer, wider and packed with features,

Pursuit's brand new OS 285, while clearly

designed for deep-water angling, makes for an allaround

    great pleasure boating experience.

Cottagers, fishermen and cruising couples will

love its spacious layout. With an overall length of

30 feet, 8 inches including the bow pulpit, this

full-figured, hard-topped wave calmer sets itself

    apart from the competition.

There are a number of fresh ideas built into

the Pursuit. First, the deck fits flush for added

space on the bridge deck and in the cabin.

Secondly, the boat's wide walk-around and secure

railings are absolutely magic. Whether standing or

sitting, this vessel has a very open feel, yet still

appeals to one's need for security through its physically

    protective space.

The idiom "killing two birds with one stone"

applies here. Pursuit's OS 285 does many things

well, rigged and outfitted to deliver memorable

times. Twin supercharged 250- hp Mercury

four-stroke Verado outboards provide the power

to run day and night, with sound economical and

    environmental correctness.

Fish much? You'll appreciate the "Pursuit Plus

Transom," complete with one of several fish

boxes, a raw water wash-down system, sprayer

and sink. Other handy features include poly racks

in the cockpit, stainless steel rod holders in the

gunwales, a tackle box with removable trays, insulated

fish box in the aft seat and a circulating 32-

gallon live well in the port aft-facing seat. There's

even a well that's painted blue, a colour known to

    calm your bait.

For those who simply can't get excited about

fishing, the OS 285 has a comfortable cabin,

complete with a stand-up head, stylish galley, circular

    sink, Corian countertop and state-of-the-art

appliances. Naturally, there are also entertainment

    options to be considered.

    While the Pursuit's V-berth and mid-berth

accommodation is inviting, the best seat in the

house should always be found at the helm - at

least in my world. Mercury's intelligent

SmartCraft gauges were located above an open,

unused moulded fibreglass console panel that will

    someday house wide-screen navigational equipment.

With plenty of fuel and a perfectly clear view,

there was little to distract me from our task at

hand. Throttling down, the OS 285 pops out of

the hole in just 4.4 seconds - very fast given the

boat's dry weight of approximately 7,570 pounds.

Mind you, having 500 horsepower helps.

Considering the torque and acceleration these

Verado engines are known for, I wasn't surprised

to see the speedometer climb to almost 51 mph.

While cruising at 30 mph or 3500 rpm, it

takes only 12.8 seconds to top out at 50 mph.

Generally speaking, the final few digits drag on -

but not with this package. We enjoyed the hull's

approach to top speed, with an 11-second burst

from 0 to 40 mph and a 0 to 45 mph run completed

    in just 14.25 seconds.

Amply sized, the Pursuit is engineered for big

water. With a deadrise of 22 degrees, its hull feels

rock solid cutting through waves. Easy to steer

and kind through the corners, the boat handles

without drama - just solid, straightforward

    manoeuvrability.

Pursuit's OS 285 Offshore is very much a serious

performer, at rest or under power. A striking

blend of luxurious appointments and practical

fishing features will excite anyone with an appreciation

for boating, regardless of its ultimate use.
