2001 Edgewater 200CC Description
Temperature barely above 10 degrees Celsius, drizzle and waves running two to two-and-a-half feet.  Perfect weather to sea-trial a boat whose claim to fame is toughness.
It wasn’t long ago that centre-console boats were popular only on the coasts. But while most centre-consoles come fitted with fishing features as standard equipment, experienced boaters are starting to value them for their multi-tasking capability and roomy, versatile cockpit space.
With the growth in popularity of centre-consoles comes growth in the number of manufacturers.  EdgeWater Boats based in Edgewater, Florida, may not be a familiar name. But its founder and chief designer is no stranger to anyone who knows Boston Whaler.  For 30 years Bob Dougherty was instrumental in building the legend of Boston Whaler. Now he is applying his experience to EdgeWater.
To understand why the EdgeWater 200 CC performs in the rough, you must under-stand how the EdgeWater is put together. It’s built using Permagrid, a process whereby the stringers and bulkheads are interlocked, then bonded to the transom, hull and deck, resulting in virtually a one-piece boat. When you run 50 mphthrough two-and-a-half-footers with absolutely no pound-ing, no hull flexing and no rattles, that’s why.
Can a tough boat be pretty? We happen to think that an all-white hull with few or no tape graphics is just fine.
If you like to carry plenty of gear, the 200 CC will spoil you with huge bow-area stor-age and additional space in the console, under the double-width helm seat and in the large anchor locker. If you are going to use the 200 CC as a people-mover, order the optional bow cushion; otherwise, seating will be limited to the cushioned cooler in front of the console, the double helm seat and the two jump seats on either side of the motor well.
On the business end of the 200 CC was one of Yamaha’s new 200-hp HPDI outboards, with the unique and sophisticated high pressure fuel injection system. Monitoring speed and engine revs was easy with the large digital readouts on a pair of Yamaha’s multifunction gauges. Despite cool and damp weather, the Yamaha started on the first turn of the key, then settled into an amazingly quiet smoke-free idle. At cruising speed and throughout the mid-range, it was smooth and quiet. Pushing the 2,100-pound hull, the 200-hp Yamaha delivered a very respectable top end of just over 50 mph. Speed out of the hole and mid-range acceleration were average.
Employing a variable dead rise deep-V hull with only two lifting strakes that terminate about 12 inches from the transom, and slightly down-turned narrow chines, the 200 CC deflects spray outwards away from the boat and carves turns that require that you hold on tight to the substantial stainless steel handrails, if you choose to stand at the console.
Unsinkable, dry, quiet and tough. The EdgeWater is one serious boat that should have great appeal to those who want craft that can work and play hard.
