2007 Monterey 194 FS Description
There has been red hot competition

recently in the market for high-end family

sport boats. More and more, the allpurpose

family bowrider designs also have to

deliver slalom skiing and wakeboard tow boat

duties - and do it with style.

Monterey's 194 FS is a deep and beamy

bowrider measuring 19 feet, 7 inches in length -

and 21 feet, 8 inches with the optional swim platform).

At this size, it provides ample seating for

adults in the bow area, as well as a spacious main

cockpit with helm and companion seats that swivel

to face aft, making the boat like a floating dock

anywhere you want to stop and drop anchor.

A popular new feature in this class of boat is

to have not only a telescoping boarding ladder on

the swim platform, but also a second one at the

bow. This is particularly handy if you have a gang

of people all in the water at once. As well, sometimes

it's easier to retrieve a fallen skier by the bow

rather than the stern. Since the standard boat

includes a reasonably sized swim area anyway,

whether or not the 194 FS is equipped with the

optional swim platform, the area is perfect for a

rider to put his board on before he jumps in the

    water.

Also at the stern is a drained cooler, tow eye

and full-width sun pad over the engine, which lifts

up to deliver engine inspection access. For major

work, the bench seat can be removed. The starboard

side of the sun pad is also removable, making

a full transom walk-through, which is a very

handy feature for older people or during tow sport

    duties.

I especially liked the helm treatment.

Monterey has finished the dash in gunmetal grey

to reduce reflections and the brushed aluminum

instruments look terrific. I would like to see simpler

markings on the speedometer, though, for

    tow sports use.

The well-located tilt steering wheel and perfectly

positioned throttle were also great, and the

steering effort and throttle action were both excellent.

Our test boat was equipped with the Volvo

5.0 GXI engine. This V8 was very smooth, delivering

impressive power and top speed. We reached

planing speeds in only 3.7 seconds, 30 mph in

4.7 seconds and raced on to a top speed of 51.2

mph. The boat was running a standard 21-inch,

    three-blade prop.

At wakeboard speeds, the Monterey's Air

Assist Chine wanted to help the boat plane off

instead of drag a big wake. For wakeboard duties,

you need to trim the engine and load the boat

down with friends. I had the chance to try a 194

FS equipped with the factory wakeboard tower. It

was not only a handsome and effective arrangement,

but provided a handy place to stow the

    Bimini roof.

Monterey includes a full fibreglass inner liner

with a cavernous ski locker in the floor of the 194

FS. It's an easy maintenance design and, if you

prefer, snap-in carpeting is available, which will

reduce the interior noise somewhat. Overall, the

interior is very posh with conveniently located

handholds, a cooler built into the companion side

dashboard, stereo system with remote controls

and impressively upholstered side panels with lots

of storage. Other luxurious touches included an

hour meter and depth finder on the dashboard.

The Monterey 194 FS is marketed as a highend

boat, but it certainly has the performance and

the luxury features to justify the asking price.
