2007 Campion 545 C2 Description
Campion in Kelowna, BC, is building a

line of boats that can compete with the

very best in their class. Our 545 test

boat had many thoughtful design features plus a

level of performance that equals or beats most

    other boats in this class.

    Campion's 545 has been dramatically

redesigned for 2007, with substantially higher

freeboard, sturdy new windshield and correspondingly

    better accommodations.

This is essentially an 18-foot family bowrider,

but the extended swim platform that comes with

the C2 package pushes its length to 20 feet, 2

inches. The beam is 7 foot, 8 inches and

Campion pegs the weight at 2,886 pounds - pretty

substantial for a boat of this size.

The 545 has a full fibreglass liner, fibreglasslined

storage compartments with drains and even

a fibreglass finish in the engine compartment for

    easy clean ups.

This boat features a pair of swivel bucket seats

at the helm and companion positions, which have

flip-flop bolsters and adjust fore and aft. There is

also a full-width aft bench seat under which

Campion has cleverly made space for a portable

cooler (included with the boat) under one side

and open space in the other. The aft bench also

has removable centre cushions to make a non-slip

finished fibreglass walk-through from the swim

platform - a very good feature. The extended

swim platform on the Campion 545 gives even

more space at the stern for swimming and water

sports. This new deeper cockpit gives a very secure

feeling and the windshield is high enough that

you look right through the middle of the glass.

The bow area is similarly well designed with

fibreglass-lined storage and open side pockets that

make it more comfortable for adults… but the

one who gets treated best is the boat's captain. The

helm is especially comfortable with a nicely angled

foot brace, tilt steering and a full array of high

mounted instruments. The boat also has a depth

sounder, which is an extremely useful feature.

The 4.3-litre MerCruiser MPI features electronic

fuel injection and produces 220 horsepower

for an impressive measure of performance.

From a standing start, the boat planed off in only

3.9 seconds, reaching 30 mph in 8.2 seconds and

40 mph in 11.9 seconds; that is strong acceleration.

Fitted with a standard aluminum three-blade

propeller, the Campion 545 reached 50.8 mph on

GPS. Perhaps more impressive was that the boat

speeds as low as 2500 rpm, solidly planing off

doing a very quiet 23 mph. Even without the

snap-in carpet (the fibreglass inner liner adds

somewhat to the sound levels), the boat was still

only 74 dbA at idle and 81 dbA at cruising

speeds. Most families will find this sound level

    quite comfortable.

The ride in the Campion 545 felt solid and

surefooted and, in spite of the exciting 50 mph

top speed, could be hauled over hard into a turn

without losing its composure. The boat struck us

as having an especially capable hull, particularly

given that it could hold wakeboard speeds of 20

to 24 mph without planing off or falling back. It's

rare to find a family bowrider like this that can

actually manage to generate a reasonably solid pull

    at those speeds.

Campion's designs and features can certainly

compete with any boat in the class and we feel it

will make an especially successful family cottage

    boat.
