2007 Lowe 175S Description
Someone recently asked me what the

    very best boat was.

In 30 years of writing powerboat tests,

no one has ever asked me that before. I had to

think for a while, but my answer was that there is

no boat that is best, just the boat that best suits

one's needs and interests. Then, there are good,

better and best within that category.

Most often, the boat we like best is one where

there is a perfect match between the hull and its

performance characteristics, as well as the engine

and its performance characteristics. Our test boat,

a Lowe Fishing Machine 175S with a Mercury

Optimax 115, is just such a magical combination.

The 175S is a deep-V with wide chines and

lift strakes - nothing odd, but solid design practice.

The centreline is 17 feet, 3 inches and the

beam is a wide 92 inches. Hull weight is an average-

to-light 1,150 pounds, and the bottom gauge

is a rather heavy 0.100 aluminum. Again, this is

all good but nothing out of the ordinary.

    The Mercury 115 Optimax is a three-cylinder,

inline, two-stroke design with two-stage direct

fuel injection. Running a standard aluminum

    three-blade at 12-3/4 x 21 inches, we found the

Lowe planed off easily at 3500 rpm doing 20

mph. We timed it at a very respectable 5.09 seconds

with two aboard and half a tank of fuel.

The Mercury has a fast trim and a wide range.

The Lowe responded very fast and quite noticeably

to trim changes, allowing you to dig the bow

down to smooth the ride or lift it high to run fast.

We hit 41.4 mph at 6000 rpm - just slightly over

    the recommended 5750 rpm maximum.

Tight turns at high speed were handled easily,

although the stern slides out until the prop finally

cavitates and you have to back off the power to

hook up again. The Lowe Fishing Machine 175S

will be a boat that should be easy to drive fast and

safely — a good thing since fishermen tend to

want to fish no matter what the weather.

On our test day, the Merc started right away

and ran without a trace of smoke. It's a nice package

    indeed.

Along for the ride, we also had fishing pro

Mike Blewett, who had been running the boat in

tournaments for a while. The fishing features he

likes best on the Lowe 175S are the wide open

expanse of floor, the stable rough water ride and

the quiet engine. However, Mike would prefer a

dual console model to the single side console for

some added protection from wind and rain.

The interior fishing features are abundant

with an optional Minn Kota 55PD Power Drive

trolling motor, standard JBL stereo, locking diver's

seat base, four bases and three pedestal seats, and

two folding jump seats concealed in the aft casting

platform. Mike has added an optional Pro Pole

    seat.

The dash has a Navman 4430 fish finder with

temperature, plus gauges for volts, trim, fuel,

speed and tach. The wheel does not tilt, but is

    well positioned.

There is a large forward compartment in the

bow, a 45-inch aerated live well, and lockable rod

storage down the port side plus an open paddle

locker to starboard. A second live well is aft with

more storage and a lockable compartment for

three batteries. The package also includes a trailer.

If these are the fishing features you want, it's a

    sweet combination!
