2007 Lund Mr. Pike 18 Description

Lund sees itself as principally a fishing boat
company. Their Mr. Pike 18 is part of
the "Sportsman Series," which offer a
wide range of great fishing features in a more
affordable and versatile package than Lund's tournament
boat line, the Pro-V Series.
Most larger Lund fish boats have what the
company calls an Integrated Power Strake (IPS)
hull. This is a deep vee with reversed chines to
shoot the spray down rather than out, increasing
the boat's lift at speed. Another interesting design
feature, the Mr. Pike 18 has a 96-inch beam at the
gunwale, but an 821?2 -inch beam at the chine for
added buoyancy at rest.
In terms of performance, the hull design really
delivers. Equipped with a new Mercury 115 hp
EFI four-stroke, the test boat accelerated to planing
speeds in only 5.3 seconds and stayed solidly
planed off at 3000 rpm doing only 17.2 mph; a
testament to the effectiveness of the IPS hull.
The Mr. Pike 18 handles tight high-speed
turns with ease. Although the boat slides a little at
the stern, it hangs on until the prop cavitates.
Another thing I liked was that the Lund reached
38.2 mph at 5500 rpm (way under the 6400 rpm
maximum), yet you felt like you were absolutely
in control at all times. The boat inspires confidence.
On test day, we were out in a shallow, weedy
lake, late in the fall. The bitterly cold water probably
cost some performance, but it did reveal that
the boat throws a little spray forward in the waves.
This can blow back in your face over the small
dual console windscreens; a full windshield is better
if you plan to fish in big water.
My favourite fishing feature is the remarkably
wide gunwales - great for downriggers, for added
strength and to make it easier to step on board.
There are gunwale-mounted grab handles and
what Lund calls their "Sport Track," a track inside
the gunwale where you can mount drink holders,
rod holders and other accessories anywhere you
want.
You can mount a kicker motor on either side
and at the stern is a large aerated well that can be
divided, a seat base and storage for the cranking
battery. The vinyl flooring is easy to hose out.
Nicely finished side panels offer lots of storage.
Perhaps the most impressive fishing feature on
the Mr. Pike 18 is the centre-mounted rod locker
with locking lid and gas struts to lift and stay
open. There are tubes for up to eight rods up to
seven feet in length and tackle storage as well. You
get another live well forward, more dry storage,
anchor locker and in the passenger side console is
a really cavernous glove box.
The helm sports a fixed bucket seat (while the
other two standard seats can be moved to the different
bases) and a tilt steering wheel. Standard
gauges include tach, speedo, fuel and trim. A
Lowrance X125 fish finder is also standard, as is a
stereo/CD system and a Minn Kota PD 80
trolling motor with foot cable and connections.
The Mr. Pike 18 comes as a complete package
including matched trailer, ready to speed you to
the fishing spots in many types of lakes and rivers.
This is a really nice package for the avid angler.
