2007 Larson 180 Sport Description
The new 2007 Larson 180 Sport is a

great example of the traditional family

cottage boat with its many virtues and

    versatility.

With a package price under $30,000, including

trailer and 4.3-litre MerCruiser V6, it really

has a lot to offer; it's stylish, there's no denying

the 50 mph top speed and the acceleration was

    very strong as well.

As a member of the Genmar family, the

Larson 180 Sport's hull is made using the company's

VEC process, where the fibreglass composite

material is injected under high pressure

into a closed two-part mould. This method

greatly reduces the environmental impact of producing

a fibreglass boat, while closely controlling

the dimensions and production tolerances. Since

Genmar is a big organization, they also have the

resources to develop excellent hull designs.

    The 180 Sport is a deep-V with 21 degrees

of deadrise and two lift strakes per side.

Unusually wide shines - six inches at the transom

and as much as seven inches wide further

forward - aid in fast planing and high-speed

handling. I timed the 4.3 MerCruiser from 0 to

30 mph in 4.75 seconds, reaching 40 in less

than 10 seconds, yet the 180 Sport remained

solidly planed down to as low as 25 mph at

2500 rpm. The ride was impressive and the

boat responded well to changes in the trim setting.

It was safe and secure feeling at all speeds,

although you're really flying. It's a boat that is

fast enough to demand a driver's respect.

The driver has it good, too, with comfortable

bucket seats, flip-up bolsters, tilt steering

and a full array of instruments. An optional

depth finder is something I recommend. My

only complaint was that the driving position left

my six-foot-tall self staring directly at the top

header on the windshield. The companion seat

is a matching swivel bucket, there is an opening

glove box housing the Jensen satellite-equipped

CD sound system and there are conveniently

placed drink holders throughout the boat. I

    especially appreciated the numerous stainless

steel grab bars, which are very important in a

boat that can go this fast.

The fibreglass liners and drains in the storage

areas were great, as well as the large underfloor

locker. Under the aft seat were openings

designed to house your life jackets where they

would really be handy in the event of an emergency.

The full-width aft bench seat could handle

three or four people. The sunpad and backrest

lift on gas struts to open up the entire engine

compartment, making the 180 Sport a very easy

boat to work on. The engine compartment had

a great gelcoat finish rather than the carpet that

some builders use - carpeting and engine oil are

    usually a bad mix.

The test boat came with the Sunbrella

mooring cover and bow cover, which had a centre

ventilator and tent pole to shed water better.

At the stern, there is a full-width swim platform

    and extended telescopic fold-down boarding

    ladder.

The Larson 180 Sport has got everything

you need along with a tremendous turn of

speed from the 4.3-litre MerCruiser engine.

Teamed with the new Turnkey Starting system,

one twist of the key from dead cold and the

MerCruiser starts right up ready for another

    exciting day on the water.
