2001 Malibu 1850 Description
Many people will only buy Canadian. Malibu Boats, built by Interior Fiberglas Ltd. of Vernon, B.C., has a great fleet to choose from, ranging in length from 17 to 21 feet.
I just had the chance to pilot the 1850 bowrider, an 18' 6" runabout that deserves two thumbs up. How can you not like the 1850? The curvy white hull looks clean and stylish. Glance inside, and you see a spacious cockpit. Look a little closer, and you’ll find all the amenities a family will need. You’ll really appreciate the Interior Fiberglas approach to accessorizing. Simplicity works.
By no means am I suggesting that the 1850 is a basic, utilitarian boat. Its appointments are pretty darn cushy. I especially like the stern seating. The backrest is contoured to offer full support, and the seat base and cushions extend up the sides. Choose an outside position and you can lounge in comfort. Reach under the side seat cushions for refreshments chilled in the draining storage compartment. Desire a jacket or beach towel? They’re both likely stored in the carpetted enclosure under the stern seat. You can hide your wet lines away in twin compartments also on the aft deck.
In fact, there’s storage space galore in this boat. Pull up the snap-in carpet and you’ll find a floor hatch. And just a step forward is the lockable ski locker. The coamings are cut out and carpetted to hold chart or magazines. There’s a hinged glove box to port, compartments under the bow seats and even an anchor locker.
I definitely felt right at home sitting at the helm. The seat is ample, even for my beamy behind. There’s plenty of knee room and the throttle position is perfect. It would have been nice if the sport wheel tilted, but no big deal, I could easily read the digital Yamaha gauges from my perch. I love the way the gauges tell you everything at a glance. It’s just unfortunate that the system makes all of the other moulded gauge housings ob-solete. That’s the price you pay for equipping your bowrider with Yamaha power.
Yet, after hearing Yamaha’s V Max175 outboard, a motor with HPDI (high pressure direct injection), how could you choose anything else? At idle, the big motor runs re-markably quiet. And 88 dbA at full speed isn’t bad either.
Speaking of speed, with the 175 on back, the 1850 has fantastic acceleration, hitting 40 mph in just 8.4 seconds. It sprints along at 52.8 mph, hammer down. At speed, the boat handled well, taking fairly tight corners and tracking responsively.
With the wraparound windshield providing shelter, you could punch down the throttle, trim up the engine and criss-cross the lake all day long.
Having experienced many of our country’s beautiful water-ways firsthand, I know you’ll never run out of places to visit in this Canadian-built craft.
