2001 Crownline 225 BR Description
I love the growl of a powerful engine.
Maybe it’s because I associate the sound with the fun times I’ve had at poker runs for high-performance boats. Or perhaps it’s because my brain recalls the deep rumble as a precursor to wild and crazy speed.
Whatever the case, the sound of the Crownline 225 starting up two slips away certainly got my full attention. When the MerCruiser 350 MAG MPI roared to life in the big bowrider’s engine compartment, my head flew up and I just know a wide smile spread over my face.
With a 57.6 mph top speed, it’s a rocket and its Bravo Three twin-prop sterndrive has stellar acceleration.I was testing along with a speed-loving gal pal of mine and I’m sure we made a spectacle of ourselves, speeding around Lake Joe almost deserted in mid-week. We were flying at 40 mph in just 8.9 seconds. Not only that, the boat planes at just 2,000 rpm.
Even with all theMagnum’s macho power, the craft is a real gentleman when it comes to handling. I pulled it into tight figure-eights without any sudden lurches or cavitation.
Power aside, the Crownline is full of special touches. If you’re going to own a performance runabout, you want it to have a racy look. The manufacturers saw to that with avant-garde geometric graphics finished
in a metallic sparkle. Twin windshield vents are a practical touch while a bench seat that splits and slides forward to make a sunlounge gets two thumbs up from us girls. The storage under the seats is just icing on the cake.
Inside the engine compartment, the convertible top is nestled in a special niche. Anyone who has had to leave the Bimini at the dock will appreciate this handy alternative.
The remainder of the 225’s storage also gets high marks. The bowrider’s ski locker is not only vented, it locks. There’s a draining
glove box that stays shut magnetically. And how about the coaming storage? Each side is divided into two sections, the aft portion being deeper than the forward half. There’s also a ton of room under the bow seating and under the bow cushion.
Crownline also put a great deal of effort into creating the 225’s helm station. Set against a jazzy checkerboard face-plate are Faria gauges with a Lowrance depth finder. The look ties in with the craft’s racy feel. A tiltwheel completes the picture.
Oh yeah, can’t forget that the captain also has a Sony CD stereo and a drinkholder to command. Without a doubt the driver is going to have the most fun in Crownline 225. But the bowrider is so well-equipped and appointed, there will never be a shortage of crew members asking to tag along for a tour.
