2001 Doral 190 CC Description
When Doral brought out its curvaceous new 19-foot bowrider last spring -- the company’s first all-new runabout in several years and a bold step into a new millennium of boating—there was little doubt a cuddy-cabin version was far behind. But by the time it appeared, it was soon overshadowed by Doral’s next big design coup, an impressive new 33-footer.
That’s too bad, because the 190 Cuddy is a very effective closed-deck translation of the successful bowrider.
The Doral 190 Cuddy ensures a spacious cockpit by sticking with the jump seat and engine box arrangement. The moulded fibreglass engine box offers great access to the powerplant, while the jump seats are comfortable with great legroom. A flip-up table on the engine box is an added feature. A semi-circular padded hatch and wide moulded-in swim platform round out the amenities aft.
Doral also opts, wisely, for swiveling seats at the helm and companion positions. They are well-shaped for maximum support and comfort. At the helm, the padded leather and wood veneer steering wheel is a luxurious touch, as are the gold-coloured Teleflex gauges and woodgrain insets in the dash.
The 190’s cockpit has a full fibreglass liner for strength and easy maintenance. Drop-in carpets add comfort, while moulded speaker housings and curvy coaming upholstery add up-to-the-minute appearance. Doral adds its signature white-fibreglass mouldings to the sides of the windscreen.
Practical touches include the foredeck sunpad, anchor roller and rode locker. Those amenities are all accessible through an opening windscreen, via some sensible moulded-in steps.
While lacking the people-moving power of a bowrider, the 190 Cuddy ensures that its crew will be able to enjoy a wide range
of waterfront activities (there's a ski-tow eye and plenty of storage space for water-toys) and still have a comfortable cabin.
That space, behind the sliding Plexiglas door leading to the cuddy cabin, is compact but comfortable. There’s a pump-out chemical head beneath a folding panel amidships and a big double bed that’s actually quite comfortable. Nubbly fabric headliner covers the ceilings, there are two halogen lamps for late-night reading and plenty of useful storage space beneath the forward cushions.
The 190 Cuddy also performs well on the water. The 5.0L fuel-injected V-8 MerCruiser pushes the boat to a top speed of 52 mph in radar-verified testing (instruments show 55 mph). That's less than a mile per hour faster than the bowrider version I tested a year earlier, powered by a V-6 MerCruiser 4.3 L EFI. I'd personally opt for the V-6.
Test boat cruising speeds range from 20 to 35 mph. At 3,000 rpm, the boat records 18.5 mph in radar testing; at 3,500 rpm the speed is 25.4 mph. At 4,000 rpm, the boat speeds along at 32.9 mph. Sound levels are typically low.
As for the boat’s overall performance and appeal, it's worth making more
    noise about.
