2001 Chaparral SST 265 Description
Remember when boats were easier to categorize? “Offshore runabout” entailed some derivative of the elongated cigarette-style high-speed wave cutters. “Cruiser” usually described a plodding semi-displacement hull, rich with comfy interior amenities. “Express cruisers” were faster, less roomy and probably less seaworthy.
So what should we call Chaparral’s SSi 265? Its low, racy lines suggest nothing of the cabin-driven architecture of the traditional express cruiser. On a 22-foot hull it could have been a cuddy, even a sport-cuddy. But that doesn’t do justice to this wide 26-footers’s comfortable space belowdecks.
Neil Gordon, the marina operator who supplied our test boat suggests “sport-cruiser.” A boat this size is not a live-aboard. Overnighter is more like it. And the cabin is more likely to be used as a change room, for preparing lunch or as a welcome respite from a hot, sunny afternoon. But, given that this sleek hull incorporates a queen-sized bed, cedar-lined closet, enclosed head and a compact galley, sport-cruiser will do just fine.
We hope the marine in-dustry takes note of a few of the innovations Chapparal adds to the SSi line, particularly the Cockpit Drainage System (CDS). The CDS provides channels that direct all of the water from the fibreglass-lined cockpit to a pump-equipped well. None of it goes to the bilge. We also liked the U-shaped rear seat that lends itself to riding, lounging or, at the dock, comfortable conversation. The ski platform is mammoth. And, why hasn’t someone moulded the bow-access steps into the cabin’s sliding door before?
Not just a pretty face, the 265 lives up to its offshore looks with a 22-degree deadrise on a straked v-hull. The hull is extended in the area of the drive to increase the effective centreline length. The result is an impressively smooth-riding boat, probably the best we’ve ever tested in the under-30-foot category.
Some of the SSi 265’s good qualities can be attributed to MerCruiser’s Bravo Three Drive system interacting with the extended V-Plane hull. Under acceleration there is virtually nothing to be gained by fussing with the power
trim. Although an mph or two can be added by trimming out at top speed, the twin props lose some of their remarkable grip. With the trim in a neutral position, we slalomed the 265 hard with no loss of prop traction. (Lord knows, we tried!) Crossing a steep wake running full-out made as little impact. In short, set it and forget it.
Just as eye-opening was the Chaparral’s low speed manoeuvrability with a single engine. The Bravo Three al-lowed finesse around the docks while coping with a sharp sou’wester off Lake Ontario. Those good manners make it an ideal craft for the first-time boater or for someone moving up in size. An experienced mariner will find this sport cruiser deeply satisfying.
