2010 Rinker 190 Mtx Test Details
By: Mike Gridley Rinker has aptly employed the word matrix – defined as a framework within which something is developed – in its new Captiva boats. Based on a pickle fork hull design, the new MTX (MatrixTechnology Xrossover) Series uses elements that have crossed over from larger boats to create a whole new form. Our 2010 Rinker 190MTX test boat was a real stand out sporting a black hull, sharp graphics with yellow accents, a white deck and cockpit, and yellow gel on the optional swim platform. The extended platform (which I think should be standard) is nice and low to the water – perfect for tow sports. Although the 190 has a built-in tow eye, a tower or pylon should be considered for serious play. The sun pad will be great for sun bathers, but the lack of a walk-through may mean more wear on the vinyl. Lifting the pad reveals a tidy engine compartment with built-in storage box and soft cooler to one side. Just be careful when tossing in gear not to hit the battery and trim pump tucked on the other side. Even more storage room is available under the expansive transom seat and in the in-floor locker. Rinker has done a nice job at the helm with an adjustable bucket seat, tilt steering wheel and well laid out panel. The passenger helm seat is a matching bucket, facing a large glove box and direct access to the marine-grade stereo. But the bow area is where the 190MTX really stands above the competition. The pickle fork design carries a wide beam forward for plenty of seating and under storage. Out on the water, theMTX hit 20 mph in 5.5 seconds powered by aMerCruiser 4.3LTKS with a modest 190-hp rating. Trimming the Alpha One drive out just a touch, the Rinker topped out at a very respectable 42.4 mph on GPS. With strakes that carry well forward, the hull offered up good stability both running and at rest. Turns were quite impressive, with the hull tracking well and turning sharply. If you’re looking for a sport boat on the small size with an expanded bow area for seating or a larger cuddy for sleeping, you may want to look toward Rinker’s new MTX Series. |
