The scene is Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, Ontario. Mother Nature has graced us with a few short days of Indian summer and the fishermen in the area are taking full advantage. The shoreline, both on the land and the water, is dotted with people gently casting a hopeful line.
As we prepare our test boat for launch, I notice eyes start to waiver from their fixed position just below the waters surface to this fishing machine. The 2010 Legend 16 XGS is a good looking fishing boat, thats for sure. And its one thats not just a pretty face; its built with care and purpose.
For its size, the 16 XGS has quite a bit of space on the carpeted bow casting deck. Here you will find an aerated 30-gallon livewell with integrated bait bucket, a large storage compartment and an in-floor mount for a pedestal seat. Our test boat also featured a MotorGuide wireless trolling motor.
Moving back into the vinyl-floored cockpit area, the fishing features continue with DropNGo rod holders to port and an integrated seven-foot lockable rod box to starboard. There are two in-floor pedestal seat mounts (in addition to the helm and passenger positions) and an additional mount on the rear casting deck, which contains additional storage.
Whether youre the captain or the co-captain, youll be riding comfortably in the high-back swivel chairs. But youll really want to be behind the wheel when its time to set out in search of your catch as the 16 XGS offers up a great ride.
Equipped with a 60-hp Mercury outboard (with two on board), the test boat planed in 4.12 seconds. From idle, we were up to a comfortable cruise of 25 mph in 7.27 seconds. Those fish dont stand a chance! And if you want a little bit more pep, no problem. The 16 XGS is rated for up to 75 hp. Overall, the ride was quiet, comfortable and stable with the 10-degree deep-V hull with reverse chines slicing nicely through our own wake.
If youre looking for a fun and functional fishing boat, the 16 XGS not only looks the part it serves the goods.
