2001 Kawasaki 1100 STX DI Description
We wrote about this machine when it made its big debut last year. Normally we wouldn't repeat a PWC preview, but since Kawasaki has made some amazing changes to its state-of-the-art three-seater, we couldn’t resist giving you the heads-up. If you liked the Kawasaki 1100 STX DI in 2000, you’re going to drool all over the 2001 model.
Of course, the new colour scheme is what will nail you  first. The red and silver racing colours have been traded in for a classy pale beige with metallic nocturne blue.
When you climb aboard, the next update you’re sure to notice is the new Kawasaki Smart Steering. It’s a steering sensor that’s been linked to the Engine Management Module (EMM) to aid in boat handling when the throttle is quickly released from high speed. Panicked riders who release the throttle in an emergency will now have some steering ability.
Last year’s craft had fuel injection. This year’s 1100 STX has direct injection which helps cut emissions so much, the engine meets 2006 EPA standards. Fuel usage has been cut by 30 percent and oil needs have dropped by half. The result? More play time at less cost.
In the engine compartment, the Kawasaki has new exhaust port timing. The change was made to improve mid-range while reducing emissions —
all without cutting top-end power. In the meantime, the engineers have updated the cylinders so that the machine’s compression ratio is set at 6.6:1. Reliability and longevity mean everything.
While the inner workings have been fine-tuned, the majority of the boat’s key features are back for a second year. Leading the list is more than 88 litres of storage space. The 2001 model is still set into motion with a finger throttle. Kawasaki designers claim this reduces hand fatigue. Also back by popular demand is the multifunction LCD system which tells all — speed, revs, hours running, time, trip distance and more.
The Kawasaki 1100 STX DI may not be all-new, but it’s all ingenious, right down to the special keel design. Take a look for yourself.
