2001 Aquapro 1001 Sportmaster Description
Inflatable tenders may look tame, but driving one—especially alone—will change your opinion. Depending on what power gets clamped to the transom, the speed and ride sensation can be quite exhilarating.
Generally speaking, rigid bottoms produce a better ride but lack certain portability and weigh more than their soft-bottomed cousins.
New Zealand-based Aquapro has a solid international reputation, the result of 19 years in the business. Using top-quality mat-erials such as UV-coated 1100 Decitex polyester base cloth, Aquapro boats are manufactured to 185 percent of the strength requirements of DIN870 international inflatable craft standards.
The Aquapro offers six models in the Sportsmaster RIB series, the 1001 fitting in the centre. Measuring 10 ft. 2 in. long and 5 ft. 4.5 in. wide,
the SMR 1001 is a popular size for yachts, larger sailboats and cruisers. Although the boat can float six people, two adults can travel comfortably without feeling cramped.
Features of the 1001 include an integral false floor, transom supports and fuel tank securing straps. It also has a zippered bow dodger that covers the tank and makes for easier tank access/placement.
I liked the injection-moulded oarlocks that keep oars in place when rowing. I further compliment Aquapro for placing a rubber keel-guard on the hull and for the white molded lifting handles.
The 1001’s fibreglass hull holds its own in choppy conditions. Weighing 110 lbs., this lightweight RIB also feels stable at rest.
Powered by a 15-hp Nissan two-stroke engine, the boat accelerated to 25 mph in a scant 6.98 seconds. Our top GPS speed was 25.7 mph. A hydrofoil attached to the motor’s cavitation plate would likely help the 1001 level out faster.
With two people aboard or more weight forward, the Aquapro is slower but easier to drive. A 10-hp motor would likely be sufficient; the 15 had power to spare.
