2001 Sea Doo PWC GTX DI Description
So how do you improve on one of the best designs in the world of watercraft?
The designers at Bombardier probably ask themselves that every time the GTX comes up for discussion.
In the case of the 2001 GTX, the designers – instead of trying to come up with a better hull (futile, I believe)—offer three different power options and a few added colours on the same hull. The GTX RFI (in gold or green) is powered by the 110-hp 782-cc Rotax Fuel Injection engine; the GTX has a carbureted 130-hp 1000-series Rotax under the hood and comes in red or blue. Also available in red or blue is the GTX DI, powered by Sea-Doo’s newest powerplant, the  1000-series 130-hp Orbital Direct Injection engine.
While Rotax Direct Injec-tion is a form of direct fuel injection designed by Rotax, the Orbital Direct Injection system has been developed in conjunction with the Australian-based Orbital Engine Corp. It’s the same technology used by Mercury Marine in its direct-injection two-stroke engines. Like Bombardier’s decision to use Mercury’s M2 jet engines.
As for the DI engine in the GTX, it starts (with no choke) and runs as smoothly as any fuel-injected powerplant should. Claiming fuel savings of 30 percent, the DI also claims to reduce exhaust emissions by up to 75.
The GTX DI I drove last summer had great acceleration, 0-40 mph in under five seconds, a radar-verified 54.7- mph top speed and an easy cruising speed of about 35 mph at 5,000 rpm.
As always, the best thing about the GTX is its ability to carve tight turns and run confidently through any sea in comfort and style.
The DI engine also has another benefit that offers some peace of mind to anyone loaning a machine to a first-time driver. Along with the standard electronic “key” the GTX DI comes with a   Learning Key that limits the rpms and keeps speeds as lower, supposedly safer levels.
