2001 Alumacraft V16 Description
It’s amazing how much effort a boat manufacturer will put into some of the smallest details.
Equally stunning is how much time a boat tester will invest in examining every little feature. I actually counted how many pieces of upholstery went into making the Alumacraft V16’s seats. Would you believe nine? Just for the seat back.
If you only want to sit your arse on the best, these are them seats. Not only is the green-and-gold colour scheme created with beautiful workmanship, the seats are nicely contoured to mould to the shape of your body.
The captain’s pedestal swivels and is mounted on rails so that anybody can get comfortable at the helm. This boat comes with two seats and three pedestal sockets so you can choose your fishin’ position.
Want more? How about a nine-and-a half-foot rodlocker? If you don’t want to put your rod away when you make the trek from one fishing hole to another, simply secure it to the starboard-located locker with the Velcro straps provided.
To port, there’s a livewell with a drop-in bait bucket. What’s special about the livewell is the insulated lid to prevent the fish you caught early in the day from stewing before you get home.
The V16 comes almost totally rigged to fish. A trolling system is standard,
with a trolling motor offered as an option. Up in the bow there’s a locking electronics compartment. It’s the ideal place to stow away your fishfinder and GPS.
Alumacraft has given full attention to the hull. The craft is constructed with two layers of metal for extra durability, a solid ride, better handling and even quieter operation. The off-white hull is decked out with some jazzy green, gold and burgundy graphics. Very classy. (You can also order the V16 in midnight grey with silver, or burgundy with gold accents.)
A spray rail blends so well with the hull you almost miss it. However, when you’re cruising through chop you sure do appreciate it. There’s not a lot of freeboard, so when riding in this craft you feel pretty wide open. Other than the windscreen and the spray rail, there’s nothing to protect you from the elements. Good thing they both do a bang-up job.
The Yamaha 50-hp outboard also does an admirable job, propelling the 16-footer to 20 mph in just 4.39 seconds. As for handling, the Alumacraft held it own across wakes and chop. It likes the prop to be buried deep for turns. It doesn’t provide a stellar ride, but the boat’s definitely dependable.
When under way, you’ll notice the useful no-feedback steering. Boats equipped with this feature don’t give you any arm strain. The motor doesn’t pull to one side or the other when you’re running straight.
Another noteworthy item: even with the 50 horses running full-speed, you don’t get much vibration.
If you’re looking for a hardy boat, aluminum is definitely the answer. And thanks to the latest technology and attention to detail, Alumacraft has turned an aluminum fishing boat, like the V16 Ltd., into a vessel with as much luxury as many high-priced day-cruisers.
