2001 ThunderCraft 220 Description
It really doesn’t take much to dress up a clean white fibreglass boat. In fact, an understated approach to striping and decals is often the best. So when it came to giving the ThunderCraft 220 – part of Doral International’s recently renamed fishing/utility boat line – an update, the company’s designer wisely worked with a light touch.
It’s easy to envision the centre-console ThunderCraft equipped with fishfinder, downriggers, an extra cooler for the catch and a gaff or landing net at the ready. But with the new stainless steel and canvas T-top, yellow and black striping, gold-finish ThunderCraft 220 decals and optional ski tow pylon in place, it's just as easy to envision the boat as a cottage or coastal runabout.
The T-top (a new addition for the 2001 model year) is a practical sun-shade that ought to be standard equipment in southern climes, while the convertible Bimini top (built on a hefty stainless-steel frame complete with rocket-launcher rod-holders) is likely to be more popular in the north.
If your favourite sport is fishing, the 220 has four rod-holders recessed into the cockpit coamings and four more flush-mounted into the aft side-decks, for keeping rods ready. There’s a tackle box with removable trays built into the starboard side of the centre console and recirculating baitwells in the aft quarter-deck area just be-hind the cockpit. The baitwells’ StarBoard lids will also nicely double as cutting boards for filleting your catch.
Two huge drained lockers in the cockpit floor will work well for carrying your iced-down catch back home. But if a fish never finds its way aboard, the lockers will just as easily hold wet docklines, fenders or ski or wakeboard tow ropes. There’s more storage in the bow area.
The swiveling helm and companion seats at the console are ideal for a pair of fishing pals, but if you’re transporting the family they’ll appreciate the bench seat aft (which also lifts and drops back out of the way) and the padded seating forward. An optional cockpit table also converts the bow area into a sunpad.
No matter which sporting camp you fall into, the 220’s sure to provide more than adequate performance. With a Mercury OptiMax 200 outboard in place, the Boats & Places test boat produced lively acceleration numbers and top speeds of 55.4 mph, in trials on the St. Maurice River near Grand-Mere, Que.
Waves rarely got big enough to test the mettle of an offshore-style boat, but the 220 easily handled the boat-wakes we scared up. It handles slalom manoeuvres with panache and cruises at a spritely 36.4 mph at 4,000 rpm (the instruments say 40 mph). At 4,500 rpm the boat runs at 41.2 mph on radar, hitting almost 50 mph at 5,000 rpm.
Whether you’re rushing home with lockers full of iced-down fish or heading back after a day of diving or explor-ing, the 2001 ThunderCraft 220 will get you there in style.
